Valuable Cars and Vehicles Found on American Pickers: What the Reported Prices Really Mean

Reported prices for American Pickers vehicles include deals, estimates and a later auction sale—not a verified list of 15 current valuations.

Several vehicles featured on American Pickers have striking price stories, but the numbers are not all valuations: they include purchase prices, an on-show estimate, and a later auction result. Available reporting supports a handful of examples—not a verified list of 15 cars—and none of the figures establishes what those specific vehicles are worth today.

Why there isn’t a verified list of 15 valuable cars

The available reporting identifies selected vehicles connected to the show, but it does not verify the complete 15-car roster implied by the title. The clearest way to compare the examples is to identify what each dollar amount represents. A seller’s asking price, the crew’s purchase price, an on-show estimate, and a completed auction sale are different things.

These reported figures are historical and tied to specific examples. They are not current appraisals, and one vehicle’s auction result does not establish the value of another example of the same model.

Reported prices for vehicles featured on the show

Vehicle Reported amount What the figure represents
1935 Auburn Phaeton 653 $26,500; later reported sale of $35,200 Reported purchase price and a 2021 auction result
1954 Nash-Healey $93,500 2019 auction result for a separate Le Mans Coupe, not a confirmed Pickers vehicle
BMW Isetta 300 $13,000 Reported show purchase price
1959 Cadillac Fleetwood $8,500 Reported show purchase price after negotiation
1936 Packard pedal car $500 purchase; about $775 estimate Reported purchase and Mike Wolfe’s on-show estimate

The figures and episode details in this table are reported by SlashGear’s overview of vehicles on American Pickers, its report on the Auburn, its report on the Cadillac, and Looper’s 2022 report on the pedal car. The separate Nash-Healey auction comparison is also described in SlashGear’s overview.

1935 Auburn Phaeton 653: a purchase followed by an auction sale

SlashGear reports that Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz bought the Auburn for $26,500 after the seller asked $80,000. The car later received substantial work, including removal of white paint, a replacement convertible roof, and an engine overhaul. It reportedly sold at R.M. Sotheby’s Hershey auction in 2021 for $35,200.

That later sale does not demonstrate a profit. Reporting does not establish whether Wolfe was the seller or what restoration work cost, and the auction result is not a present-day appraisal.

1954 Nash-Healey: don’t confuse a comparable auction car with a show find

The show reportedly featured two Nash-Healeys in different condition: one stored indoors with its original motor, and another left outdoors and missing the correct motor. SlashGear cites a $93,500 auction result in 2019 for a 1954 Nash-Healey Le Mans Coupe, but does not establish that the auction car was either vehicle from the show.

That distinction matters: condition, completeness, and the identity of the exact car can make a comparison misleading. The auction figure is a reference point for a separate example, not the value of the Pickers’ cars.

BMW Isetta 300: reported purchase price, not a valuation

SlashGear reports that Wolfe paid $13,000 for the featured Isetta in Season 12’s “Big Boy Toys.” The amount describes a reported acquisition; it does not show what the car later sold for or what it would command now.

1959 Cadillac Fleetwood: the deal price is not the asking price

According to SlashGear, the owners initially asked $12,000. Wolfe countered at $6,500, and a coin flip preceded an $8,500 purchase price. That is a reported episode deal, not a resale result or verified current value.

1936 Packard pedal car: a miniature with an on-show estimate

Looper reported that Wolfe paid $500 for the Packard pedal car and estimated its value at about $775 on the show’s “Double Bubble Trouble” episode. The $775 is an on-show estimate, not a documented completed sale. Because this is a miniature pedal vehicle rather than a full-size car, it belongs only on a list using “cars” loosely.

Looper also reports a separate $1,800 deal for an Austin J40 pedal car. That figure is a deal amount for another miniature vehicle, not an appraisal of the Packard.

Other notable finds that are not straightforward car valuations

Aerosmith’s 1964 International Harvester Metro van

SlashGear reports that the crew bought the original Aerosmith tour van for $25,000 after original guitarist Ray Tabano confirmed its identity. It is a van, not a passenger car. Wolfe’s reaction, quoted by SlashGear from the show, was: “We just got a piece of American rock ‘n’ roll history.” The reported purchase price reflects the deal, not a later sale or a current valuation.

1914 Merz Cycle Car

SlashGear describes a rare Merz Cycle Car connected to the series, but the reporting cited here does not establish a market value. Rarity alone is not enough to assign a defensible price, particularly without a documented sale or details that allow a buyer to compare its condition and authenticity.

How to interpret a price attached to a collectible vehicle

Before treating a number as evidence that a vehicle is “worth a lot,” check what it measures and whether it concerns the same car. The most useful comparisons distinguish:

  • Asking price: what a seller hoped to receive, not necessarily what a buyer paid.
  • Purchase price: the reported amount paid in a particular deal; it does not reveal later resale value.
  • On-show estimate: an opinion stated on the program, not a documented transaction.
  • Auction result: a completed sale at a particular time and venue; it applies to that example and its condition.
  • Restoration expense: money spent improving a car, which is separate from both purchase price and sale price. For the Auburn, the available reporting describes work but does not establish its cost.

For an individual car, provenance and authenticity, original or replacement components, completeness, storage history, and restoration quality all affect whether a comparison is meaningful. A rare model in poor or incomplete condition should not be priced by borrowing the result for a better-preserved example.

A classic car value guide or collector car price guide can help frame comparisons, but it is a reference—not a guarantee of what a particular vehicle will sell for. A documented sale of a closely comparable car is more informative when its identity, configuration, condition, and sale date are clear.
