What GDC’s 2024 State of the Game Industry Report Says About Layoffs, AI and More

GDC’s 2024 State of the Game Industry report surveyed more than 3,000 professionals in October 2023. Here’s what respondents said about layoffs, AI, engines, accessibility and more—and what the figures do and don’t show.

GDC’s 2024 State of the Game Industry report captures a profession navigating employment anxiety alongside changes in tools, accessibility and media opportunities. Its findings come from more than 3,000 game industry professionals surveyed October 11–29, 2023—not a measure of the industry in 2026, and not a count of all game workers or job losses.

GDC and Game Developer worked with Omdia on the 12th annual survey, published in January 2024. The percentages below describe respondents’ answers. The available report information does not establish a probability sample representative of every game worker, so the findings are best read as a snapshot of surveyed professionals’ experiences and opinions.

How did layoffs affect respondents?

In the GDC State of the Game Industry survey, 35% of respondents said layoffs had affected them or their company in the preceding 12 months. That broad measure includes several kinds of exposure; it does not mean 35% had personally lost their jobs.

Reported experience or concern Share of respondents
Personally laid off in the prior 12 months 7%
Had colleagues laid off 17%
Saw layoffs in other teams or departments 11%
At least slightly concerned their company could see layoffs in the following 12 months 56%

The first three figures are the report’s breakdown of layoff exposure, while the 56% figure measures concern about the next 12 months. They are respondent reports, not a census of layoffs or a forecast that those respondents would lose work. One anonymous respondent attributed the strain to pandemic-era expansion and consumers spending less during a cost-of-living squeeze, calling it “the bubble is sadly bursting.” That comment illustrates one participant’s view; it does not establish a cause for the layoffs. Dom Tait, Omdia’s Research Director, wrote in the report’s researcher note: “Studios grew too quickly during the pandemic.”

What the figures mean for workers’ finances

The survey indicates widespread exposure and concern, but it does not quantify lost earnings, unemployment duration, severance, savings or household financial strain. It therefore cannot tell an individual worker how likely they are to be laid off or how much money to set aside. For personal financial decisions, a respondent’s role, employer, contract and local job market matter more than applying the survey percentage to an individual situation.

What did respondents think about generative AI?

Ethical concern was stronger and clearer than any consensus about AI’s overall effect. In the 2024 survey, 84% of respondents were somewhat or very concerned about ethical use of generative AI. Asked about its impact on the game industry, 57% expected a mixed effect, 21% a positive one and 18% a negative one.

Open responses raised concerns about job displacement, credit, copyright and consent in training data. These answers record worries and expectations; the survey did not measure actual job displacement caused by AI. Its distinction matters: a person can believe the technology may have both benefits and harms while still being concerned about how it is developed or used.

Were studios reconsidering their game engines?

Unity and Unreal Engine each accounted for 33% of respondents’ primary toolsets. One-third said they had considered switching engines or had already switched, while almost half had not considered switching. The report placed this question amid debate over engine policies and pricing.

Primary toolset, switching consideration and completed switching are different measures. The survey does not establish that one-third of respondents had changed engines, nor that a particular policy or price change caused each decision.

Where did the report show signs of adoption or opportunity?

Accessibility in current projects

In the 2024 survey, 48% of respondents said their companies had implemented accessibility measures in current projects, up from 38% in the 2023 edition. Reported examples included closed captions, colorblind modes, control remapping, content warnings and accessible controls. This is a rise in respondents reporting implementation; it does not demonstrate that every released game became more accessible.

Games adapted for screen and other media

Ten percent of respondents said their company’s game had been or was being adapted into film, episodic television or other media; among AAA respondents, the share was 26%. A broader 38% said an adaptation had been discussed, approached, pitched or undertaken, so that figure includes projects short of an actual adaptation. On the industry trend, 63% considered the rise in adaptations good for the industry, 26% said maybe and 4% said no.

How were games being promoted, and what did respondents say about platforms?

Word-of-mouth and social media were each used as marketing methods by 86% of respondents. Twitter/X was the most-used promotion platform at 76%, followed by YouTube/Shorts at 64%, Facebook at 63% and LinkedIn at 61%.

Reach and sentiment pointed in different directions: Omdia’s analysis found that 97% of open-response mentions about Twitter/X were negative. That finding concerns the sentiment of analyzed comments, not a survey measure of platform effectiveness or proof that studios were abandoning it. The report depicts continued use alongside substantial frustration.

What did respondents report about business models and blockchain?

For current projects, respondents most often reported digital premium games (51%), followed by free-to-download games (32%), downloadable content or updates (24%) and physical premium games (21%). These are shares of survey respondents reporting models used on current projects—not revenue shares, sales data or market share. The categories need not add to 100% because respondents could report more than one model.

Seventeen percent said their studios were somewhat or very interested in blockchain, down from 27% in the 2023 survey; 77% said their studios were not interested. These figures describe reported studio interest, not blockchain adoption across the whole industry.

What else did the survey cover?

The report also addressed work hours, sustainability, remote work, diversity initiatives and unionization. The findings summarized here do not provide specific figures for those topics, so they do not support a numerical comparison or a claim about how conditions changed. They do show that the report’s scope extended well beyond layoffs and emerging technology.

How should readers compare these findings over time?

  • Check that survey field dates, question wording, response choices and respondent composition align before treating year-to-year percentages as a trend.
  • For employment, distinguish personal layoffs from colleague or team exposure and from concern about possible future layoffs.
  • For AI, keep ethical concern separate from predictions about overall industry impact.
  • For engines, distinguish primary tool use from switching plans or completed switches.
  • For adaptations, separate titles already adapted or in production from projects merely discussed, pitched or approached.

Those distinctions keep a useful professional snapshot from being mistaken for a universal industry statistic or a current forecast.
