In a July 22, 2021 report, Futurism quoted Elon Musk saying Tesla was probably responsible for “two-thirds” of his combined personal and professional pain. That was his personal estimate—not an independently measured statistic. The article’s headline, “Elon Musk Says Tesla Has Caused Him More Suffering Than Anything Else in His Life,” paraphrased the remark rather than quoting it word for word.

What did Musk reportedly say?

Futurism’s Victor Tangermann reported that Musk made the remark at a blockchain conference on the preceding Wednesday. The article quoted him: “I would say I’ve had some pretty tough life experiences and Tesla’s probably responsible for two-thirds of all personal and professional pain combined, to give you a sense of perspective there.”

The wording matters: Musk reportedly described Tesla’s share of his combined personal and professional pain. “Two-thirds” was his own estimate, not a statistic derived from an independent measurement.

Why the headline is broader than the quotation

The headline’s phrasing—that Tesla caused him more suffering than anything else in his life—is a paraphrase. The reported quote does not literally say “more suffering than anything else”; it gives a proportion of Musk’s combined personal and professional pain. Treating the headline as a verbatim quote would overstate what the article says.

What context did the 2021 report give?

Futurism placed the remark alongside Tesla’s stated ambition to support a transition to renewable energy and challenges the company faced at the time. Its report mentioned a then-pending shareholder lawsuit concerning Tesla’s 2016 acquisition of SolarCity, as well as production pressures and battery-cell supply. Those details describe the context of the 2021 article; they should not be read as a description of Tesla’s current business or legal situation.

What can be verified from the available account?

The account is a secondary report published by Futurism on July 22, 2021. It attributes the quote to Musk and says he spoke at a blockchain conference, but does not provide a transcript or recording. The quotation and event setting should therefore be attributed to Futurism rather than presented as independently confirmed.
