Best Self-Directed IRA Companies: How to Choose a Custodian

Choose a self-directed IRA custodian by confirming it accepts your exact asset and account type, reviewing every applicable fee, and understanding what the provider does—and does not—do.

There is no single self-directed IRA company that is best for every investor. The right choice is the custodian that accepts your exact asset and account type, explains how it will administer the transaction, and discloses the full costs. A custodian’s willingness to hold an investment is not an endorsement of its quality or legality.

What a self-directed IRA company does

A self-directed IRA is an IRA held by a custodian that permits a broader range of investments than most conventional IRA custodians. It remains subject to IRA rules; “self-directed” does not exempt the account or its owner from tax law. The custodian administers the account and processes permitted transactions. That role is distinct from being the investment sponsor, broker, financial adviser, or tax professional.

The SEC warns that self-directed IRAs can involve fraud risks and additional account or asset fees. Before investing, independently investigate the issuer and offering documents, how the asset is valued and held, whether it can be sold when needed, and whether the proposed transaction complies with IRA rules. How to compare custodians

Confirm the exact asset and transaction

Do not rely on a general claim that a provider supports “alternative assets.” Ask whether it will administer the specific asset, ownership structure, transaction, and account type you intend to use. Get the answer and any required documentation directly from the provider before transferring retirement funds. Provider policies can differ, and acceptance does not prove that a transaction is lawful.

Calculate the complete cost

Compare the charges that apply to your account and planned activity, not just the advertised annual fee. Request a current, account-type-specific schedule and check for establishment, annual maintenance, asset or transaction processing, storage, wire, expedited processing, and other applicable charges. Fees can change; confirm the terms directly before opening or funding an account.

Understand administration and support

Ask how the provider handles account opening, funding, investment instructions, document review, asset processing, and ongoing records. Check which forms and supporting documents are required, how transactions are submitted, and what service expectations the provider states. Do not assume a custodian will find investments, assess their merits, or resolve legal and tax questions.

Separate custody from diligence

A custodian’s administrative acceptance is not investment due diligence or a recommendation. The SEC advises investors to research self-directed IRA investments independently. Review the offering, issuer, valuation, custody arrangements, liquidity, fees, and transaction legality; consider a qualified tax or legal professional for questions specific to your circumstances.

One provider example: Directed IRA

Directed IRA’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists a $50 one-time establishment fee, a $495 annual self-directed IRA account fee, and $50 one-time asset processing fees. The company says the annual fee includes three alternative asset holdings and notes that fee schedules can change. These are figures for one provider, not industry averages. Confirm the schedule for your account type and ask about any additional charges before proceeding. Directed IRA pricing

On its Traditional IRA page, Directed IRA says it supports alternative assets, that investors are responsible for finding and vetting investments, and that it does not provide investment, tax, or legal advice. Those are the provider’s statements about its service, not an independent assessment of its quality. Directed IRA Traditional IRA

Why a universal “best” ranking can mislead

A 2026 provider comparison says it evaluated fees, investment options, account control, technology, and reputation using information pulled from company websites as of July 2026. That is one published comparison framework and cutoff, not proof of a neutral or fully verified winner. Treat rankings as starting points: verify current fees, accepted assets, account terms, and service procedures with each provider. NerdWallet’s 2026 comparison

IRA rules that still apply

Prohibited transactions

The IRS describes prohibited transactions as dealings involving a plan and a disqualified person that are prohibited by law; similar rules apply to IRAs. A prohibited transaction involving an IRA can cause the account to be treated as distributing all its assets at fair market value on the first day of the year. Because the consequences can be severe and depend on the facts, review the IRS rules and consult a qualified professional about a specific transaction. IRS: Prohibited transactions

Collectibles and precious metals

The IRS says IRAs generally cannot invest in collectibles such as art, antiques, gems, coins, or alcoholic beverages. Certain precious metals may qualify only when requirements are met. A custodian’s willingness to process a purchase does not establish that the asset or transaction meets those rules. IRS: Investments in collectibles in an IRA

A practical checklist before moving money

  1. Identify the precise asset, transaction structure, and IRA account type you plan to use.
  2. Ask each custodian to confirm in writing that it will administer that specific transaction and identify its documentation requirements.
  3. Obtain the current fee schedule for your account type and calculate the likely total, including asset-specific and transaction charges.
  4. Ask what the custodian administers and what remains your responsibility, including finding and evaluating the investment.
  5. Independently review the investment, its issuer, valuation, custody, liquidity, and offering documents; verify legal and tax questions with a qualified professional.
  6. Review current IRS rules on prohibited transactions and collectibles before directing IRA funds into an asset or related-party transaction.
