Two separate Delta Air Lines developments changed international travel in early 2026, but they were not announced just days apart: Delta’s final reported nonstop flight from New York’s JFK to Brussels operated on January 5, 2026, while a U.S. Department of Transportation order required Delta and Aeromexico to wind down their joint venture by January 1, 2026. The first was a route discontinuation; the second ended certain forms of coordination, not all flights or cooperation between the airlines.

These dates describe distinct changes, not a single schedule announcement. The Brussels route report was published later and described a flight that had already operated; the joint-venture wind-down came from a separate regulatory order.
Is Delta canceling flights to Mexico?
No blanket cancellation of Delta or Aeromexico flights to Mexico was part of the order. USDOT said the airlines could retain existing U.S.–Mexico flying and continue arms-length codesharing, marketing, and frequent-flyer cooperation. Delta could also keep its equity stake in Aeromexico. What ended was the joint venture’s ability to coordinate in ways requiring antitrust immunity, specifically common pricing, capacity management, and revenue sharing. The carriers could still cooperate in permitted ways, but that is not the same as operating under the former immunized joint venture.

Why did USDOT order the venture to wind down?
USDOT said Mexico had not remedied noncompliance with the 2015 U.S.–Mexico Air Transport Agreement, pointing to changes involving Mexico City airport slots and cargo operations. Those are the U.S. government’s stated allegations and rationale, not an uncontested account of the dispute. USDOT order
The airlines disputed being penalized for actions by the Mexican government. The Associated Press reported that Mexico’s president described the cargo change as a technical decision related to congestion, and that the airlines had not decided whether to challenge the order at the time of that report. Delta said it was disappointed and was reviewing the order. In a September 15, 2025 statement, the airline said the decision “will cause significant harm to U.S. jobs, communities and consumers traveling between the U.S. and Mexico.” Delta statement

Who flies nonstop from New York to Brussels?
A report published September 16, 2026 said Delta’s final JFK–Brussels flight operated January 5, 2026, and that Brussels Airlines continued nonstop service on the route. The same report said Delta had reinstated Atlanta–Brussels service in June 2025. The reported end of Delta’s JFK service does not mean Brussels lost all nonstop service from New York, and the Delta–Aeromexico order does not determine whether a particular Mexico flight operates. The changes concern different routes, markets, and arrangements.

What should travelers do?
- If you have a JFK–Brussels booking: Check the operating carrier and your reservation directly. The cited reporting describes Delta’s route ending, but does not establish replacement itineraries, fares, or your individual booking status.
- If you have a Delta or Aeromexico booking to Mexico: Do not assume the order canceled your flight. Confirm your itinerary with the airline, especially if you received a schedule-change notice.
