Air Astana finalized an agreement for up to 15 additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners: five firm aircraft, five options and five purchase rights. Deliveries of the newly ordered planes are scheduled for 2032–2035. Three more 787-9s are expected through lessors, bringing the airline’s planned fleet to as many as 18.
What Air Astana finalized
Boeing announced the finalized order on February 17, 2026, describing it as Air Astana’s largest single airplane purchase. The agreement followed a commitment made in November 2025, shareholder approval in January 2026 and a signing on February 9, according to Air Astana’s annual report. Boeing’s February announcement and Air Astana’s shareholder announcement spell out the agreement’s scale and timing.
Five firm aircraft, plus ten conditional aircraft
The “up to 15” figure is a maximum, not 15 firm orders. Air Astana’s disclosed structure is five firm 787-9s, five options and five purchase rights. Options and purchase rights preserve the opportunity to acquire additional aircraft, but they should not be counted as firm deliveries under the current order.
When will Air Astana receive the aircraft?
The five newly ordered firm aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2032 and 2035, according to Air Astana’s annual report. The published schedule concerns the newly ordered aircraft; it does not establish when any options or purchase rights might be exercised or delivered.

Separately, three 787-9s are expected to join Air Astana through lessors. Including those aircraft, Boeing says the airline’s planned 787-9 fleet could reach 18. That total combines the five firm aircraft in this agreement, up to ten additional aircraft if the options and rights are taken up, and the three expected lessor deliveries.
Why Air Astana wants the 787-9
Air Astana says the aircraft will augment its long-haul fleet and expand its ability to serve international markets from Central Asia and the Caucasus. Boeing has said the 787-9 could add capacity on existing routes and enable expansion into North America. Those are stated plans and possibilities, not confirmation that a specific new route has launched.

In Boeing’s November 2025 announcement, the manufacturer said Air Astana operated three 767 widebodies and described a 303-seat configuration for the 787-9. Those details came with the earlier commitment announcement; they do not independently verify the airline’s current fleet or establish the final cabin layout for the aircraft it will receive.

Air Astana’s 2025 annual report values the total 18-aircraft Boeing 787-9 fleet, including engines, at USD 7 billion based on manufacturer list prices. This is a list-price valuation for the planned fleet—not a disclosed negotiated price for the finalized purchase. Air Astana has not disclosed the negotiated contract value in the cited announcements.
