Re:

Which Diesel Truck Is Cheapest to Own? How to Compare Your Options

A low price or payment does not make a diesel pickup cheap to own. Compare exact trucks with the same workload, local costs, inspection evidence and holding period.

There is no defensible universal list of nine diesel pickups that are “surprisingly affordable” to own. A low asking price or payment does not prove low ownership cost, and the available comparisons do not establish a ranked set of nine models. The practical answer is to compare trucks that fit your work using the same ownership period, local costs and condition assumptions.

Why a nine-truck affordability ranking can mislead

Ownership cost is specific to the truck and buyer, not just its badge. A candidate’s purchase price, financing, fuel use, maintenance, inspection-supported repairs, insurance, registration, travel, downtime and resale value all affect what it costs over the time you keep it. DieselTrucks.ca’s ownership-cost guide recommends a consistent net-cost comparison rather than naming one make or engine as the universal winner.

Available material does not provide comparable current prices, repair estimates or model-year-specific ownership ledgers for nine pickups. It therefore cannot support a reliable nine-model ranking. Treat examples of diesel trucks as candidates to evaluate for a particular job—not as proven bargains.

Start with the work the truck must do

Cost comparisons are useful only among trucks that can safely and reliably meet your needs. Before comparing dollars, define the payload, towing, passenger capacity, route, climate and uptime you require. A truck that cannot handle the job is not an affordable alternative, even if its purchase price is lower.

Mopar Fuel Filter Set (68157291AA) (68436631AA)
  • OEM FUEL FILTER: Engineered to meet OEM specifications for fit, filtration performance, and long-lasting reliability. Direct replacement for part numbers 68157291AA and 68436631AA on 2020-2024 Ram trucks with 6.7L I6 Cummins turbo diesel engines.
  • DUAL FILTRATION: The Mopar Fuel Filter Set includes both primary and secondary fuel filters to maintain optimal fuel flow and engine performance throughout your truck's fuel system.
  • KEEPS YOUR ENGINE HEALTHY: The Mopar Fuel Filter Set helps ensure long-term engine performance by removing contaminants and water from diesel fuel to prevent injector damage and fuel system corrosion.
  • EASY TO INSTALL: This automotive replacement part is simple to install. A drop-in replacement design fits factory diesel fuel filter housings for a quick swap without modifications.
  • 85+ YEARS OF EXPERTISE: As the Genuine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of parts for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and FIAT brands, Mopar knows your car inside and out. Our factory-original equipment adheres to strict testing, so you get the best..

Compare the exact model year, engine and configuration. Specifications and costs from a current truck should not be assumed to apply to an older version. A used truck’s maintenance records, corrosion, condition and likely repairs can outweigh the reputation attached to its model or engine; arrange an independent, model-aware inspection before committing. See DieselTrucks.ca’s used-truck guide for its discussion of condition and inspection.

Build the same ownership ledger for each candidate

Choose a holding period and make a low, base and high estimate for each truck using the same assumptions. Include the costs and offsets below rather than comparing monthly payments alone.

  • Acquisition and borrowing: purchase price, fees, taxes where applicable, down payment, interest and other financing costs.
  • Fuel: expected fuel use for your workload multiplied by local diesel prices and annual distance or operating hours. Use realistic assumptions for your route and use, not an unverified reputation for economy.
  • Maintenance and repairs: scheduled service plus repair exposure supported by the truck’s inspection, records and condition. Separate known work from uncertain future repairs.
  • Insurance, registration and travel: use quotes and fees relevant to your location, and include travel needed to buy, service or operate the truck.
  • Downtime: account for the cost of lost work or substitute transport if the truck is unavailable.
  • Exit value: estimate what you may recover when you sell or trade it at the end of the same holding period.

Subtract estimated exit value from the costs incurred during the period to compare net ownership cost. Keep the low, base and high cases consistent across candidates. A truck may lead under one workload, location or holding period and lose under another.

Examples to shortlist by use case—not by claimed savings

The used-truck guide identifies older 7.3L Power Stroke and 5.9L Cummins applications as possibilities for buyers willing to consider an older vehicle. With these, age, corrosion and repair history are central to the decision. It also names the Silverado/Sierra 1500 with a 3.0L Duramax for lighter-duty use where diesel fuel economy may be a consideration. These are use-case examples, not evidence that any is among the cheapest trucks to own.

Doc's Diesel Fuel Filter, 6.7L Powerstroke F250 F350 F450 2017+ Fits FD4625
  • Better Media, Longer Life: A three-layer pleated cellulose glass media traps the fine rust and grit that budget filters let slip past, and the large-capacity pleats hold more before the flow drops off.
  • Fits Your 6.7 Powerstroke: Confirmed for 2017 through 2026 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke F-250, F-350, and F-450. Order by your model year and this is the correct fuel and water separator for your truck.
  • How It Works: Doc's Fuel Filters remove contaminants like separate water from dirt, rust, and debris, protecting fuel system components and ensuring peak engine performance.
  • Meets The SAE J1985 Standard: Efficiency is confirmed by an independent lab, not an in-house number, and the high-strength carbon steel housing is built to take the pressure of a 6.7L fuel system.
  • Ready To Install: Each filter ships with the o-rings you need, so there is nothing extra to buy. Change it every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, 15,000 at the outside, per your vehicle manufacturer's schedule.

Edmunds’ September 2026 overview says major heavy-duty pickup lines continue to offer diesel options in 2026 and discusses light-duty Duramax and older Cummins and Power Stroke applications. That is reliability-focused editorial context, not a comparable total-cost ranking. Check the exact year and configuration you are considering rather than transferring a current offering or broad reputation to a used truck.

Keep commercial-truck cost figures in perspective

The US Department of Energy summarized a 2021 study estimating a ten-year total cost of $690,737 for a model-year 2025 Class 4 delivery truck, $838,967 for a Class 6 delivery truck and $917,095 for a Class 8 vocational truck. It also reported an estimated average of $1.82 per mile over ten years for a model-year 2025 Class 8 sleeper tractor. These are estimates for US commercial-truck classes, not consumer pickup comparisons, so they should not be used to rank diesel pickups.

Doc's Diesel Fuel Filter, Fits 6.6L Duramax Chevrolet/GMC 2500HD 2017-2026
  • Third-Party Tested Efficiency: Independent testing rates it at 98.13 percent efficiency down to 3 microns, so the number is verified rather than claimed.
  • Confirms Your Fit: Built for 2017-2026 Chevrolet/GMC 6.6L Duramax 2500HD, 3500HD, 2020-2026 Chevrolet/GMC 3.0L Duramax 1500. Use the fitment card on this page to confirm your exact year and configuration before ordering.
  • How It Works: Doc's Fuel Filters remove contaminants like separate water from dirt, rust, and debris, protecting fuel system components and ensuring peak engine performance.
  • Interchange: AC/Delco TP1015, Wix WF10451, Premium Guard DF99173, Purolator F21393. Confirm your part number before ordering.
  • Service Interval: Change according to your vehicle’s manufacturer warranty. Fuel Filters should be changed every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, or 15,000 maximum.

The DOE summary notes that labor is a large operating expense; fuel is the largest expense after labor for tractors, while maintenance and repair is the largest expense for Class 8 refuse trucks. Those cost patterns help explain why duty cycle matters, but they do not establish what an individual pickup will cost to own.

Make the decision with local evidence

  1. Set the job and holding period. Write down capacity, route, climate, uptime needs and how long you expect to keep the truck.
  2. Identify exact candidates. Record model year, engine, configuration, mileage and asking price; remove any truck that cannot meet the job.
  3. Gather candidate-specific evidence. Review service records, obtain local insurance and registration costs, estimate fuel for your use, and get an independent inspection with repair findings.
  4. Use one set of assumptions. Build low, base and high ledgers for every candidate, including borrowing, downtime and expected exit value.
  5. Choose based on the result that fits your risk tolerance. Compare net cost and the uncertainty behind it; do not treat a low purchase price, a model reputation or an optimistic resale estimate as proof of affordability.

The ownership-cost method cited here comes from a Canadian-market guide, while the DOE estimates concern US commercial trucks. Prices, fuel, taxes, insurance, registration and vehicle availability vary by location, so use local figures for your own comparison.
