Labor Day 2024 fell on Monday, September 2. Many major grocery chains were reported open, but schedules varied by retailer and location. Costco was reported closed; Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale were reported open. These are historical, chain-level reports—not a guarantee of any individual store’s hours.
Grocery stores reported open on Labor Day 2024
Contemporary roundups listed the following grocery retailers as open. The reports do not provide a complete national inventory, and a chain’s status does not establish every branch’s schedule.
| Retailer | Reported status | Hours detail |
|---|---|---|
| Aldi | Open | Axios reported limited hours; exact local hours were not established. Axios |
| Albertsons | Open | Named among grocery stores reported open; specific hours were not stated. Axios |
| Food Lion | Open | Named among grocery stores reported open; specific hours were not stated. Axios |
| Kroger | Open | Roundups reported stores open, with hours varying by location. A current Kroger holiday page says stores are open with regular store hours, but it is not a record of every location’s 2024 schedule. Axios Kroger WGAL |
| Publix | Open | WGAL reported normal operating hours. WGAL |
| Safeway | Open | Named among grocery stores reported open; specific hours were not stated. Axios |
| Trader Joe’s | Open | WGAL reported stores would close at 5 p.m.; local schedules may differ. WGAL |
| Walmart | Open | WGAL and CBS Miami reported regular hours. WGAL CBS Miami |
| Whole Foods Market | Open | CBS Miami reported regular hours. CBS Miami |
Warehouse clubs: Costco was closed; Sam’s Club and BJ’s were open
Axios reported that Costco closed for the holiday, while Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale were open. This distinction is based on chain-level 2024 reporting, not an address-specific archived schedule. Axios
Why “open” did not mean the same hours everywhere
Reported schedules included regular hours, reduced hours, and Sunday hours. The roundups do not establish the hours for every branch, so check the specific location’s listing or a local notice before traveling. Kroger also cautions on its current holiday-hours page that pharmacy and clinic hours may vary from store hours; that current guidance should not be treated as a record of all Kroger locations’ Labor Day 2024 operations.
