Oprah Winfrey’s early poverty and Viola Davis’s childhood deprivation are supported by the sources available here. Rihanna’s account describes family difficulties, while Dolly Parton’s describes family work and educational barriers; neither source establishes that she grew up in poverty. Those experiences are not interchangeable, and the evidence here does not support a verified list of ten super-rich stars.
Why “came from nothing” needs a more precise definition
The phrase can suggest poverty, hunger, unstable housing, family labor, migration, or other hardships. Those are different circumstances, and a difficult upbringing alone does not prove a person was poor. The profiles below distinguish what the cited accounts document from what they do not establish.

There is also no consistent, comparable current wealth measure for these four people in the sources cited here. Their career success should not be treated as proof of a particular net worth, and the available evidence cannot substantiate the “super-rich” label for every profile.
Oprah Winfrey: documented poverty in early childhood
What is documented
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says Winfrey spent the first six years of her life in poverty in rural Mississippi, living with her grandmother in a home without indoor plumbing. That description is specifically about her early childhood, not every stage of her upbringing. In an Academy of Achievement interview, Winfrey also reflects on how she understood her circumstances as a child; her perspective adds context without changing the material conditions described by the Academy.

How her career developed
Winfrey’s later public-speaking and broadcasting work led to national television success, production, and media ownership. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences profile also records her producing career and charitable work. These are career milestones, not a measure of current wealth.
Viola Davis: childhood deprivation described in her own account
What is documented
In coverage of Davis’s conversation with Oprah, Netflix Tudum describes her childhood in Central Falls, Rhode Island, as marked by poverty and deprivation, including lack of food, cold winters, and housing insecurity. The April 22, 2022 article connects that account to Davis’s memoir, Finding Me, and her decision to pursue acting. These are details of Davis’s experience, not a template for how poverty affects everyone.

During the conversation, Davis said, “I think that failure and hardship are interesting learning tools.” The line is reproduced in Netflix Tudum’s coverage of the 2022 discussion; it should be understood in that personal context.

Rihanna: difficult family circumstances, but poverty is not established
A 2009 Guardian interview describes difficult family circumstances, her mother’s work, Rihanna caring for a younger brother, and the audition that led to a recording opportunity. That source supports describing family responsibilities and an early career opening. It does not establish that Rihanna grew up in poverty, so calling her childhood impoverished on this evidence would go beyond what the account says.
Dolly Parton: family work and barriers to education
Oprah Daily’s November 12, 2020 report says Parton’s father could not read or write, the nearest school was difficult to reach, and children in families like hers worked in fields and contributed food to the household. It also says her father supported Parton and her 11 siblings through farming, construction, and odd jobs. This is meaningful family context, but the report does not quantify the household’s poverty.

The report discusses Parton’s book Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. It also reported that her Imagination Library had donated 150 million books to young children by the time of publication in 2020; that is a dated figure, not a current total. See Oprah Daily’s report for the interview coverage.

Wealth estimates, where available, need their own dated and attributable evidence for each person. A number reported for one celebrity cannot establish a comparable ranking or justify extending the “super-rich” label to others.
