Among model-year 2024 SUVs on Cars.com’s list of vehicles under $40,000 that earned both an IIHS award and a five-star NHTSA rating, the lowest reported starting price was $26,415 for the Mazda CX-30. The list’s prices include destination, but they are dated 2024 figures—not current quotes. It is also a filtered selection, not a ranking of every 2024 IIHS-winning SUV.
Ten lower-priced 2024 SUVs on the dual-award list
The table orders the SUV entries in Cars.com’s May 23, 2024 article by the prices it reported. The selection requires both an IIHS award and a five-star NHTSA rating, and Cars.com says its prices include destination. The award column reflects the IIHS’s 2024 award list; production-date and model-year qualifications matter for some vehicles.
| SUV | Cars.com reported 2024 price, including destination | 2024 IIHS award and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mazda CX-30 | $26,415 | Top Safety Pick+; listed for 2024–25 |
| Honda HR-V | $26,450 | Top Safety Pick+; listed for 2024–25 |
| Kia Sportage | $28,565 | Top Safety Pick; listed for 2024–25 |
| Hyundai Tucson | $28,875 | Top Safety Pick+; applies only to vehicles built after March 2024 |
| Honda CR-V | $30,850 | IIHS award level and model-year/build-date qualification: see the IIHS 2024 award list |
| Mazda CX-50 | $31,720 | Top Safety Pick+; subject to the production condition on the IIHS list |
| Subaru Ascent | $35,740 | IIHS award level and model-year/build-date qualification: see the IIHS 2024 award list |
| Kia Telluride | $37,585 | Top Safety Pick+; listed for 2024–25 |
| Nissan Pathfinder | $38,040 | IIHS award level and model-year/build-date qualification: see the IIHS 2024 award list |
| Hyundai Palisade | $38,045 | IIHS award level and model-year/build-date qualification: see the IIHS 2024 award list |
Prices and award details are drawn from the Cars.com comparison and the IIHS award archive. The available price figures do not establish a present-day transaction price, trim-equipment match, or identical eligibility across every vehicle configuration. Confirm the specific vehicle’s build date and equipment against IIHS information before buying.
What the IIHS awards measure
For 2024, Top Safety Pick+ required good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, acceptable or good in the updated moderate overlap front test, acceptable or good standard headlights, and acceptable or good pedestrian front crash prevention. The updated moderate-overlap test adds a rear-seat dummy and focuses more directly on back-seat protection.

Top Safety Pick required good ratings in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests, along with acceptable or good standard headlights and pedestrian front crash prevention. The IIHS 2024 award criteria explain the requirements; the February 27, 2024 IIHS release discusses the updated test.
The award is a useful screening signal, not a promise that all award-winning SUVs provide equal protection. IIHS groups awards by vehicle size and cautions that a smaller award winner may not protect occupants as well as a larger vehicle without an award. In the 2024 results, Hyundai Motor Group brands—Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia—earned 16 awards in total, while Mazda earned five Top Safety Pick+ awards. Those brand totals provide context, not a direct comparison of the individual SUVs above.

How to interpret the price comparison
These are the prices Cars.com printed for model-year 2024 vehicles, including destination, in its under-$40,000 dual-award comparison. They are not current dealer offers, and the table should be read as a dated entry-price ranking within that article’s scope—not as a claim that these were the ten cheapest SUVs among every IIHS award winner.
A separate May 22, 2024 release from IIHS and Consumer Reports used Kelley Blue Book New Car Fair Purchase Prices dated April 19, 2024, rounded to the nearest $100, for each model’s least expensive trim. That is a different measure from Cars.com’s listed price and should not be substituted into the same ranking without labeling the change in basis. For example, the release reported $25,700 for the CX-30, $27,300 for the Sportage, $27,800 for the Tucson, $29,700 for the CR-V, and $31,200 for the CX-50. These are dated fair-purchase estimates, not MSRP or current quotes. See the IIHS and Consumer Reports release.

For a real purchase decision, compare the same model year, trim, drivetrain, destination charge, and required equipment in local listings. Then check financing, taxes, insurance, and expected ownership costs. IIHS and Consumer Reports recommend getting an insurance quote for the specific vehicle; an award or low listed price alone does not determine the household cost.

Verify the exact SUV before you buy
- Find the model year and build date on the specific vehicle, then confirm that the IIHS award applies to it. A model name alone may not be enough when eligibility has a production-date condition.
- Check trim and standard equipment, especially headlights and safety systems. Award criteria can depend on standard equipment, and a similarly named trim or configuration should not be assumed to qualify.
- Review the vehicle’s NHTSA rating separately. The Cars.com selection required five stars, but that additional filter does not make it a complete list of IIHS award winners.
- Request an out-the-door quote and an insurance quote for the exact vehicle. Compare the final costs rather than relying on a dated starting-price figure.
