If you received Form 1099-NEC, you generally report the income on your individual tax return in TurboTax; you do not file the same 1099-NEC with the IRS. The business that paid you files the information return and sends you a copy. In TurboTax, payments for services performed as a business commonly belong on Schedule C, though the right treatment depends on your circumstances.
How to enter 1099-NEC income in TurboTax
- Choose the matching tax year. A 1099-NEC reports payments made during a calendar year. Use the TurboTax return for that same tax year.
- Review the form. Check your name, taxpayer identification number and reported amount. If a detail is incorrect, ask the payer to issue a corrected form. TurboTax’s 1099-NEC guide explains the form and reporting context.
- Enter the income in the appropriate section. In TurboTax, follow the self-employment or business-income prompts if the payment relates to services you performed as a business. TurboTax indicates that the income may be reported on Schedule C or Schedule E, depending on the circumstances; Schedule C is not the right answer for every 1099-NEC recipient. TurboTax’s guide describes this distinction.
- Enter eligible expenses and keep records. If you have qualifying business expenses, report them where TurboTax asks for business expenses. Keep receipts and other supporting records. An expense is not deductible just because it was paid while working; eligibility depends on the expense and your situation.
- Review the return before filing. Check that the income is included once, that expenses are supported, and that the income category reflects the work or activity that generated the payment.
Which TurboTax product supports 1099-NEC entry?
TurboTax’s current product information lists 1099-NEC Snap and Autofill in Do It Yourself Premium and Expert Assist Premium. The feature is available in the mobile app within Schedule C for filers with 1099-NEC income. See TurboTax’s product page for current feature details. Product names and availability can change, so check the page for the tax year you are filing.
Snap and Autofill can help bring information from the form into the return, but it does not determine whether the income belongs on Schedule C or Schedule E, establish that an expense qualifies, or replace your review of the completed return.
What if you did not receive a 1099-NEC?
Report taxable income even if no 1099-NEC arrived. The form’s reporting threshold is a rule for the payer’s information-return obligation; it does not set a minimum amount you may leave off your tax return. TurboTax’s 1099-NEC guide also addresses reporting income without receiving the form.

Understand the thresholds—and whose responsibility they are
The IRS’s current Form 1099-NEC FAQ gives a general payer reporting threshold of $600 for payments made before 2026 and $2,000 for payments made in 2026. The IRS says the threshold after 2026 may be adjusted for inflation. These amounts describe when a payer generally has to report qualifying payments; they do not excuse a recipient from reporting taxable income.
Self-employment tax has a separate threshold. The IRS says net earnings from self-employment of $400 or more generally trigger self-employment tax. That $400 figure is not the 1099-NEC payer threshold and does not determine whether income is taxable. See the IRS 1099-NEC and independent contractors FAQ.

What the payer files
The payer—not the recipient—generally files Form 1099-NEC with the IRS and furnishes a copy to the recipient by January 31 of the following year. The IRS says paper filing requires Form 1096 and that 10 or more information returns generally must be filed electronically. These are payer-side rules; they do not mean that a recipient must submit their copy of Form 1099-NEC separately. See the IRS information-return e-filing guidance.
