To stop a recurring payment authorized through PayPal on a US account, sign in on PayPal’s website and go to Settings > Payments > Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. Select the merchant, then choose the cancellation control on its payment details page and confirm. If you also want to end the merchant’s service or subscription, cancel with the merchant separately.
Cancel an automatic payment on PayPal’s website
- Sign in to your PayPal account on the website and open Settings.
- Select Payments.
- Open Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments. PayPal’s menu labels can vary by account interface.
- Select the merchant whose authorization you want to stop.
- On the merchant’s payment details page, choose the cancellation control and follow the confirmation prompts. PayPal says this page is where you can cancel the automatic payment: PayPal Help: What is an automatic payment and how do I update or cancel one?
Cancel the merchant service separately if needed
Canceling the PayPal authorization stops future payments through that agreement, but it typically does not end the underlying subscription, service, or contract. PayPal says only payments or subscriptions set up through PayPal can be canceled through PayPal; removing PayPal as a payment method usually does not close the merchant account. Contact the merchant to end the service, confirm any remaining balance or charges, and ask when access will end. The merchant’s contact information may appear in the automatic-payment details. Keep the merchant’s cancellation confirmation.
What to check before changing payment settings
Changing your preferred card is not the same as canceling
An automatic payment may have its own assigned payment method, prioritized for that agreement even if you change the general preferred card or bank account. To stop the recurring authorization, cancel the merchant’s agreement rather than relying on a change to your default payment method. See PayPal’s automatic-payment guidance.
Use the app’s current labels
PayPal also describes its app as a place to manage subscriptions or linked businesses, but menu labels can vary. Follow the labels shown in your current app; if you cannot find the agreement there, use the website path above.

Cancellation does not automatically refund a completed charge
The cancellation steps stop the automatic-payment authorization; they do not reverse a payment that has already completed. For a refund, contact the seller and request one. PayPal’s guidance on recurring subscriptions explains the distinction: How to cancel recurring payments in 4 ways.

The effective date and service access depend on the merchant’s terms. PayPal says most cancellations take effect immediately, while some services process cancellation at the end of the billing cycle. Check with the merchant for the date future billing stops and the date access ends. The US help instructions cited above do not state a universal cancellation cutoff for the next scheduled payment, so do not assume that canceling just before a charge will prevent it.
