Yes. Amazon staff guidance says prepaid Visa cards can pay for most orders on Amazon.com. Add the card as a credit or debit card in Your Payments or at checkout, but make sure the full order total fits within its available balance. Amazon lists restrictions that can cause a payment to fail.
How to add a prepaid Visa card to Amazon
Enter the prepaid card as a credit or debit card; you do not add it as an Amazon gift card. Amazon says a newly added card is saved for later orders.

- From your account: Go to Your Account → Your Payments → Add a payment method, then enter the card details. Amazon’s payment-method instructions describe how to add a card.
- During checkout: Select Add a credit or debit card and enter the prepaid Visa details.
- Use the issuer’s billing details: If the card issuer requires online registration, register a name and billing address with the issuer first, then use those details at Amazon. Amazon staff guidance notes that registration requirements vary by issuer.
What can prevent a prepaid Visa payment from working?
The balance must cover the whole order
Amazon staff guidance says a prepaid Visa cannot be combined with another credit or debit card on a single order. The available card balance therefore needs to cover the full amount due, including applicable tax and shipping. If it falls short, reduce the order total or use another payment method for a separate order.
An authorization may temporarily reduce the available balance
Amazon may authorize the card when you place an order. An authorization is not the completed purchase charge, but the issuer may temporarily hold the authorized funds, leaving less available for the order. One Amazon staff response mentioned a $1 authorization in its specific context; that example is not a universal or current amount. Amazon staff payment guidance describes the authorization issue.

- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.

Issuer registration or verification requirements can cause declines
Some issuers require a registered name and billing address for online purchases. Amazon staff guidance also warns that a card may fail if its issuer requires CVV verification that Amazon does not support in the described payment context. Check the issuer’s online-use requirements and confirm that the card details and billing information match its records.
Can you use a prepaid Visa to buy an Amazon gift card?
Possibly. In a March 2023 forum response, Amazon staff said a valid prepaid Visa or Mastercard could be added to Your Payment Methods and used to buy an Amazon gift card, then redeemed to the Amazon balance. This is dated guidance, not a guaranteed workaround: Amazon or the card issuer may reject a prepaid-card gift-card purchase, and gift-card terms apply. Amazon’s gift-card terms cover their use for eligible Amazon.com goods and services.

This differs from paying directly with the prepaid Visa. A gift card, if successfully purchased and redeemed, puts funds into your Amazon balance; it does not make the prepaid card usable for every order or remove the issuer’s restrictions.
Which Amazon payment rules apply?
This guidance is about consumer shopping on Amazon.com. Similar-sounding payment rules for other Amazon services address different situations:

- Amazon.com checkout: The prepaid-card guidance above concerns orders placed by consumers.
- Seller Central: Restrictions on prepaid cards as a seller charge method apply to seller accounts, not consumer checkout. Seller Central’s payment-method guidance is separate.
- Amazon Pay: Amazon Pay is used at participating third-party merchants; its payment guidance does not establish what will work for an Amazon.com order. Amazon Pay’s help page covers that service.
- Amazon Business: Business accounts may have shared-payment restrictions that are distinct from consumer checkout. Amazon Business guidance addresses those account rules.
What if you already placed the order?
Changing a saved payment method does not change the payment method on an order already in process. Amazon’s guidance says to manage the payment method for the order itself rather than assuming an account-level update will carry over. Amazon’s payment help explains the distinction.
