How much does Hertz charge for an additional driver?
Hertz’s U.S. Rental Qualifications and Requirements page lists an additional-operator fee of $13.50 per day, with a maximum of $189 per rental, at corporate and participating licensee locations. This is a U.S. policy figure, not a price guaranteed at every Hertz location worldwide.
Local terms can differ. For example, Hertz’s IPTT11 location-specific terms list $30 per day. Treat that as an example for that location’s terms, not as a general Hertz rate. The Calgary terms, by comparison, list $13.50 per day with a $189 cap. Check the terms attached to your pickup location and rental rather than assuming the U.S. general fee applies.
When can an additional driver be free?
Eligible Gold+ member’s spouse or domestic partner
Hertz describes a no-fee additional-driver benefit for an eligible Gold+ member’s spouse or domestic partner. Hertz’s Gold+ FAQ says the benefit is available in the U.S. and Canada and applies only to a spouse or domestic partner. The additional driver must have a credit card in their own name and meet standard rental qualifications. Hertz’s Gold+ benefits page states: “Pay no additional driver fees for a spouse or domestic partner in the US;”

That benefit is not a general waiver for any friend, relative, or travel companion. Confirm that the member, additional driver, location, and rental agreement qualify.
Other listed exceptions
Hertz’s U.S. qualifications page lists a waiver when both the renter and additional operator are AAA members, and for drivers of physically impaired renters. Some rental terms may also automatically cover specified operator categories. The exact categories and conditions depend on the location and agreement; do not assume an exception applies without checking those terms.

Does a spouse count as an additional driver?
A spouse may qualify for Hertz’s Gold+ spouse or domestic-partner benefit if the membership and rental meet its conditions. Outside that benefit, whether a spouse is covered without a fee depends on the applicable rental terms and location. Hertz’s terms include location-specific provisions about spouse coverage, so marital status alone is not enough to establish that the driver is covered.

- Check the terms for your pickup location. Use the location’s rental terms and your reservation details to confirm the fee and any waiver that applies.
- Confirm the driver qualifies. Hertz’s terms may require the additional operator to be present, sign an additional-operator form, show a valid driver’s license, and meet age and other rental qualifications.
- Have Hertz approve and add the driver. Drivers outside any automatically covered category require approval and must be listed as authorized operators under the rental agreement.
- Review the agreement before driving. Make sure every person who will operate the vehicle is authorized and that any applicable fee or waiver is reflected in the rental paperwork.
Do not let an unlisted driver operate the vehicle on the assumption that a relationship, membership, or informal permission is sufficient. The rental agreement and applicable location terms determine who may drive.

What to verify before pickup
- The exact pickup location and the terms attached to your rental.
- Whether the proposed driver is automatically covered or must be added.
- Whether a Gold+ spouse/domestic-partner benefit or another stated waiver applies.
- Whether the driver meets age, license, presence, signature, and other rental requirements.
- That every person who will drive is authorized in the rental agreement.
