Tipping an Uber driver is optional. To tip in the app at the end of a ride, rate the driver and select a tip amount when prompted. If you have already left the car, Uber says you can add a tip for up to 30 days after the trip.
How to add a tip after your Uber ride
- At the end of the ride: Rate the driver, then choose a suggested tip or enter an amount if that option is available.
- Later in the app or on the web: Open your trip history in the Uber app or at riders.uber.com, select the ride, and choose “Add a tip.” Uber also says the emailed trip receipt may include a link to add one. These options are available for up to 30 days after the trip.
- With cash: You can give the driver cash instead. Uber says drivers are free to accept or decline a tip.
Uber says it charges no service fee on tips. That is Uber’s stated platform policy; it does not address any separate tax or payment obligations that may apply.

Can you tip during an Uber ride?
An in-trip tipping option may appear in the app, and Uber says the amount can be edited during the trip. The option is not necessarily available for every market or ride type, so use the controls shown in your app.
Who pays for an in-app tip?
A digital tip is generally charged to the payment method used for the trip. If a voucher paid for the ride, Uber says the tip is charged to your personal payment method rather than the voucher. For a business trip, your employer’s travel policy or trip limit may also mean the tip is your personal expense; check your company’s expense rules before assuming it will be reimbursed.

What to know before confirming
- Check the amount carefully: Uber says a submitted tip becomes immediately available to the driver and cannot be refunded retroactively through its tip-edit process.
- Split fares do not split the tip: The person who originally requested the trip selects the tip amount, and Uber says it is not divided among the other passengers.
- There is no universal Uber tip amount: Uber’s rider guidance confirms that tipping is voluntary but does not prescribe a percentage or dollar amount. Choose an amount only if you want to tip.
- Features can vary: Uber’s help pages are localized and do not establish that every tipping option appears in every country or ride type. Follow the options available for your ride; a localized page’s Uber Taxi-specific directions should not be treated as a worldwide rule.
