Uber says what it keeps varies by trip and week. The difference between a rider’s payment and a driver’s earnings is not automatically Uber’s profit: it can also reflect taxes, tolls, third-party charges, and amounts allocated to insurance and operating expenses.
What does Uber keep from a ride?
Uber describes its retained amount as the difference between what a customer pays and what a driver earns, excluding tips, tolls, and certain fees, taxes, and surcharges. The company says the amount changes from trip to trip and week to week, including with promotions and driver availability. That means a single percentage or dollar figure cannot accurately describe every ride.

For drivers in the United States, Uber says weekly statements and fare breakdowns are available in the Earnings Hub. Those records are more useful for understanding a particular trip than applying a universal “Uber cut” to the fare.
Why the rider’s fare is not Uber’s take
A rider’s all-in price can contain several distinct components. Uber’s UK Help Center describes a breakdown that separates driver earnings, Uber’s service fee, government taxes and third-party charges, and a booking-fee component that supports insurance and operational expenses. The exact components and arrangements depend on the market; the UK explanation should not be assumed to describe every country’s fare structure.

- Driver earnings: what the driver is paid for the trip, before tips.
- Uber service fee: a variable amount that differs by trip.
- Taxes and third-party charges: amounts that may be collected for government or other parties, rather than retained as Uber profit.
- Booking-fee component: in the UK explanation, a charge that supports insurance and operational expenses.
Uber also notes that in markets using upfront fares, driver earnings can differ from the rider’s upfront fare. Its US marketplace pricing page describes variable service fees and says pricing features can differ across US markets and may not apply elsewhere.
What Uber’s annual figures do—and don’t—show
Uber Technologies’ 2026 Form 10-K, covering the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, reports the following company-wide and segment figures:

| 2025 measure | Reported amount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Total Trips | 13.567 billion | Mobility rides and Delivery orders; a shared ride with three paying consumers can count as three Trips, while an UberX ride with three passengers counts as one. |
| Total Gross Bookings | $193.454 billion | Mobility, Delivery, and Freight; includes applicable taxes, tolls, and fees, so it is not the same as Uber revenue. |
| Mobility revenue | $29.670 billion | Annual revenue for the Mobility segment, not a per-ride amount. |
These figures do not yield a reliable amount Uber makes per passenger ride. Total Trips includes Delivery orders, while Mobility revenue covers a broad segment rather than a representative trip. Uber also says its revenue presentation varies with its role in a transaction: it generally acts as an agent and reports revenue net of driver and merchant earnings and driver incentives, while in some markets it is responsible for the service and presents end-user revenue gross, with driver payments classified in cost of revenue.
For those reasons, dividing Mobility revenue by total Trips would combine mismatched measures and produce a misleading “per ride” figure. The cited 10-K summary does not provide a single dollar take for each ride.

Revenue, retained amount, and profit are different
Even where the amount left after driver earnings can be identified for a trip, it is not necessarily Uber’s profit. Some parts of the rider-driver difference represent taxes, tolls, third-party charges, or allocations for insurance and operations. Revenue is an accounting measure, while profit reflects costs as well; neither should be inferred from the rider’s fare alone.
