Goodwill Industries International lists televisions as items people may donate, but the local Goodwill organization decides what its donation centers accept. Before you load an old TV, contact the center and describe its type and condition.
Why Goodwill’s answer varies by location
Goodwill Industries International says that “what items you can bring to a donation center will depend on the Goodwill organization you’re donating to.” Its donation guidance lists televisions among possible electronics donations, but that national list is not a promise that a nearby center will take yours. Goodwill’s donation guidance explains that local organizations set acceptance policies.
That distinction matters for older sets. A location may have limits based on the television’s type, condition, or its ability to handle or recycle the item. Goodwill’s national guidance does not establish one TV-specific condition rule for every center.
What to ask before bringing an old TV
Call or contact the local donation center before transporting the set. Goodwill advises donors to test electronics when possible and confirm what the local center accepts. Goodwill’s donation tips provide that general guidance.

- Does this location accept this kind of TV, such as a CRT or flat-screen?
- Does the television need to work, or will the center take it in its current condition?
- Should it be tested, and does it need to include a remote, stand, power cord, or other accessories?
- Are there specific drop-off hours or instructions for large electronics?
Do not assume a CRT is automatically prohibited or that a broken TV will be accepted. Get an answer for your specific set and location before making the trip.
If Goodwill won’t accept the television
Look for an electronics collection or recycling program available in your area. Goodwill Industries International describes routes that include Dell Reconnect partnerships, state-run programs, and R2-certified electronics recyclers, but those network-wide options do not establish what a particular nearby site accepts. Check with the local program about the TV type, condition, drop-off or pickup availability, and any fee.

Goodwill Industries International’s 2025 annual impact report says the network recycled 15.4 million pounds of electronics in 2025 and 660 million pounds of computer and IT-related equipment through Dell Reconnect to date. It also reports that nearly half of local Goodwill organizations work with Dell Reconnect, while more than a quarter work with a state-run program or an R2-certified electronics recycler. These are network-wide electronics figures, not TV-specific acceptance rates or confirmation that a particular Goodwill accepts televisions.

A historical Goodwill Industries International paper on e-waste explains that some agencies stopped accepting televisions because unwanted sets had low market value and broken TVs could cost the agency money to recycle. The paper dates from around 2010–2011, so it offers context for why policies may differ; it does not establish current rules at any local center.
