The best choice depends on what you layer underneath, how much coverage you want, and how formal your usual clothes are—not on a universal warmth ranking.
How the classic wool coat styles differ
| Style | Shape and typical use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wool overcoat or topcoat | Longer and generally more structured. A traditional choice over tailoring, but it can also bring structure to knitwear or jeans. | Hem length, room over a suit, shoulder and chest fit, cloth weight, and single- or double-breasted front. |
| Peacoat | Shorter, traditionally associated with naval uniforms, and usually double-breasted with broad lapels. Suits smart-casual outfits and knitwear or denim. | Shoulder fit, room for layers, length in proportion to your build, wool content, buttons, and pockets. |
| Duffle coat | A relaxed, casual style commonly recognized by its hood and toggle fastenings. | Cut over knitwear, cloth weight, hood and toggle details, and whether its casual look fits your everyday use. |
Retailers do not always use “overcoat” and “topcoat” consistently. Judge the actual coat—especially its length, fabric, and construction—rather than relying on the name alone. Brooks Brothers’ US collection, for example, lists wool pea coats, wool duffle coats, and a wool topcoat: Brooks Brothers’ classic men’s wool coats.
Choose by wardrobe, coverage, and formality
Pick an overcoat for suits and longer coverage
If you regularly wear a suit or want a coat that falls farther down the body, start with a tailored overcoat. Woolmark describes it as formal outerwear worn over a suit and says it should sit squarely at the shoulders without excessive room at the chest. A long coat can also work with jeans and a shirt, so it need not be reserved for business clothes. See The Woolmark Company’s guide to winter coats for its style guidance.
Pick a peacoat for a compact smart-casual shape
A peacoat is a useful choice if you prefer a shorter coat and wear knitwear, denim, or office clothes that are less formal than a suit. Woolmark describes the style as suitable for smart-casual dress and sufficiently sophisticated for an office; Mackintosh also recommends knitwear and denim with it. Its shorter cut changes the silhouette and coverage, so consider how it works with your proportions and the layers you normally wear.
#1 Best Overall
Pick a duffle coat for relaxed daily wear
A duffle coat’s hood and toggles give it a more casual character than a tailored overcoat. Consider whether that look suits your routine and whether its cut leaves enough room for the sweaters you plan to wear. The defining details matter as much as the label: check that the hood, toggles, and pockets are practical for you.
Fit the coat over the clothes you will actually wear
Try the coat on over your usual winter layer. If it is meant to go over a suit, wear the suit; if you usually wear a thick jumper, test that instead. The shoulder line should sit cleanly, and the chest should close comfortably without pulling. A coat that is too roomy can lose its shape, while one that is too tight can restrict movement or strain its fastenings.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
These checks reconcile two common fit goals: Woolmark recommends a square shoulder and not too much extra chest room for an overcoat, while Mackintosh says a wool coat should accommodate a jumper or jacket without pulling at the shoulders. For a peacoat, Woolmark describes a snug shoulder fit; “snug” should not mean restrictive over the layer you intend to wear. Mackintosh’s guide to wool coats also suggests choosing around your environment, wardrobe, and daily routine.
Compare the garment details, not just the style name
- Length and coverage: Check where the hem falls on you and whether the sleeves cover your wrists when your arms are relaxed. Longer coverage may suit colder conditions, but no comparable insulation measurements are available here to rank these styles by warmth.
- Fiber composition: Read the material breakdown for the outer fabric and any collar or trim. A coat described as wool may still include other fibers in particular components.
- Construction: Inspect seams, pockets, lining, buttons or toggles, and fastening points. These affect how the coat functions and how it looks in regular use.
- Layering and cut: Check for comfortable movement when the coat is fastened over your normal clothes, not only when it is open over a thin shirt.
- Care label: Find out how the specific garment should be cleaned before buying. Care requirements vary by coat.
For a concrete example—not a benchmark for every peacoat—Burberry’s US listing for its navy Wool Pea Coat specifies a 100% wool outer, an 81% wool/19% cotton undercollar, a 100% cupro lining, buffalo-horn buttons, and specialist dry cleaning. The listed length is 80 cm (31.5 in) for size IT 50; the page says the model is 187 cm (6 ft 2 in) and wears IT 50. The displayed price was $2,650 when the page was accessed on 2026-10-08. Price, stock, and size availability can change; check the current Burberry product listing for updated details.

Keep a wool coat in good condition
After wearing it, let the coat air out and brush away surface dust. Use a broad hanger that supports the shoulders, and avoid professional cleaning unless it is needed. Always follow the individual care label: the Burberry peacoat example above specifies specialist dry cleaning, while care instructions may differ on other garments.
