There is no evidence-based single best professional alto saxophone for every player. Yamaha’s YAS-875EXII Custom EX and Yanagisawa’s WO models are strong candidates to audition; Yamaha’s YAS-62III is another professional-series option. The right choice depends on how an individual instrument responds, feels, and sounds in your hands—not just its materials or maker’s descriptions.
Professional alto saxophones to put on your shortlist
The models below are current options identified on manufacturer or distributor pages. Their descriptions of sound and performance are product claims, not independent comparative test results.
| Model | Positioning and construction | What the published description says |
|---|---|---|
| Yamaha YAS-875EXII Custom EX | Yamaha Custom EX alto | Yamaha says it was developed with saxophonists Nobuya Sugawa, Jean-Yves Fourmeau, and Otis Murphy. It lists a Custom V1 neck and describes outstanding intonation, wide dynamic range, and expressive freedom. Yamaha product page |
| Yamaha YAS-62III | Professional series | Yamaha USA describes the 62III as a professional-series instrument for players from rising students to seasoned professionals, distinct from its Custom Z and Custom 82 series. Yamaha USA saxophone lineup |
| Yanagisawa AWO1 | Brass body; professional model | Conn Selmer lists a wood case and Yanagisawa Classic 140 mouthpiece among the included items. Confirm the package with the seller. Conn Selmer AWO1 page |
| Yanagisawa AWO2 | Bronze body; professional model | Conn Selmer attributes a strong tonal core to a re-engineered bore and toneholes and describes WO-series key features. Those are vendor descriptions, not measured findings. Conn Selmer AWO2 page |
| Yanagisawa AWO10 | Brass body; positioned as an elite model by Conn Selmer | Conn Selmer’s description positions it for accomplished players. Conn Selmer AWO10 page |
| Yanagisawa AWO20 | Bronze body; positioned as an elite model by Conn Selmer | Conn Selmer describes a darker tonal edge for the bronze body. Treat that as a product description, not a guarantee of how it will sound to you. Conn Selmer AWO20 page |
| Yanagisawa AWO37 | Positioned as an elite alto by Conn Selmer | Conn Selmer calls it the replacement for the A9937. Conn Selmer AWO37 page |
Yanagisawa’s international lineup lists A-WO1, A-WO2, A-WO10, A-WO20, and A-WO37. Naming and availability can differ by market, so verify the exact model and configuration with a local authorized seller. Yanagisawa international alto lineup
How to choose between the models
Start with response and intonation
Try the instrument across its range rather than judging it from a few comfortable notes. Check low-register response, intonation between registers, articulation, and altissimo if you use it. Yamaha makes an intonation claim for the YAS-875EXII, but the available product information does not provide controlled comparative measurements. Your own audition matters more than treating that claim as a head-to-head result.

Check key feel against your repertoire
Yamaha calls out a teardrop F key on the YAS-875EXII; Conn Selmer describes key and buffer details on its WO model pages. Neither feature establishes that the mechanism will suit every hand. Play passages you actually perform, including transitions and awkward reaches, and notice whether your fingers remain relaxed.
Listen for the sound you want, not a material shortcut
The AWO1 is brass and the AWO2 is bronze; Conn Selmer also describes the AWO20’s bronze body as having a darker tonal edge. Body material alone does not guarantee a particular sound. Compare instruments in your own playing context and judge projection and dynamic response directly rather than assuming a material label predicts the result.

Compare the complete package and local support
The AWO1 and AWO2 pages specify a case and Classic 140 mouthpiece. Check what is included with the exact instrument you are buying. Also confirm the seller’s warranty, setup or adjustment service, repair access, return terms, and current regional price; the product pages do not establish those details for every sale.
How to audition a professional alto
- Use a consistent setup. When possible, compare instruments with the same mouthpiece, reed, and familiar playing material so those variables do not obscure differences between saxophones.
- Test the full range. Play soft and loud passages, low notes, register changes, articulation, and altissimo if relevant. Listen for evenness and check intonation with your usual reference.
- Assess comfort over real music. Play passages from your own repertoire and notice key reach, hand tension, and mechanism feel.
- Try the instrument where it will be used. If possible, assess projection in a practice room or performance setting similar to yours.
- Compare the exact instruments and terms. Ask about the specific instrument’s setup, included equipment, service, warranty, returns, and final price before deciding.
What is not established by the available product information
The cited pages document model descriptions and some features, but they do not establish a universal winner, independent reliability rankings, comparable current street prices, regional stock, or a controlled head-to-head test. Treat manufacturer and distributor language as a starting point for choosing auditions, not proof that one model will outperform another for every player.
