Michał Sołowow built his fortune through decades of company formation, public-market investing, acquisitions and industrial expansion—not from a single business or deal. His path ran from construction and retail into building materials and chemicals, with low-carbon energy emerging as a newer priority. Forbes Polska’s 2025 retrospective identifies Synthos, Cersanit and Barlinek among his core industrial holdings; its reporting also documents costly setbacks along the way.
Where Sołowow’s business career began
Sołowow’s business story predates the industrial names most associated with him today. In a June 2025 Forbes Polska interview, he recalled bringing PLI into public trading in 1994. He described PLI as an operator of OBI and MAX supermarkets and said he already had a substantial construction business at the time. That account places an operating and entrepreneurial base behind his later investment activity, rather than making his career appear to begin with Synthos. Forbes Polska, June 2025
He later summarized his range of interests with a sports metaphor: “Ja jestem wieloboistą, ale zazdroszczę kolegom, którzy są specjalistami, bo bycie konsekwentnym i realizowanie wartości w jednym biznesie daje większą równowagę.” In English, he said he was an all-rounder, while envying specialists who can build consistency and value in one business. How Cersanit and Barlinek became industrial holdings
Forbes Polska’s June 2025 retrospective traces Sołowow’s move from early business activity into acquisitions and industrial ownership. Cersanit came through privatization; he took over Barlinek in 1999. The account describes restructuring Barlinek and pushing the flooring business toward exports, a pattern of acquiring a company and then changing its direction and reach rather than relying only on starting businesses from scratch. The expansion was not free of controversy. Forbes recounts a contentious proposed treatment of Opoczno and a subsequent compromise merger with Cersanit. That episode complicates any simple picture of smooth deal-making: ownership changes and restructuring could involve disputes as well as growth.
How the Dwory investment led into Synthos
The chemical business grew from an investment in Dwory during its late-2004 public offering. In Forbes Polska’s account, Sołowow recalled acquiring a 15% stake and later increasing it. His involvement developed into a controlling role and a larger industrial group that became Synthos. The sequence illustrates how a public-market position could be an entry point to a longer-term ownership and expansion strategy. Forbes Polska, June 2025
Why the record includes setbacks as well as acquisitions
Sołowow’s industrial investments did not all work. Forbes Polska describes the 2016 acquisition of Ineos Styrenics as unsuccessful and reports a PLN 153 million impairment in 2017 associated with the facilities. The figure is a reported impairment, not a measure of his personal loss or overall wealth. In a later move in the same broad industrial sphere, the group acquired German synthetic-rubber facilities from Trinseo in 2021. Forbes Polska, June 2025
Together, the episodes show why his career is better understood as a sequence of investments, restructurings and changes in direction than as a guaranteed formula. Acquiring a company can create the opportunity to expand it, but it also exposes an owner to operating problems and sector conditions that can turn an investment into a costly setback.

Forbes Polska’s February 2025 profile identified Synthos, Cersanit and Barlinek as core industrial holdings and described a BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) program as a major new strategic project. The article reported a plan for the first plant in 2030, followed by 10 additional reactors across three locations by 2035. It also cited an estimate of approximately PLN 200 billion for a 7.2 GW program. These are reported plans and projections from February 2025, not confirmation that construction, approvals, financing or later milestones have been completed. Forbes Polska, February 2025
In an interview published on 29 June 2026 and identified in the article as a 2025 interview, Sołowow called the project a priority and said: “Ten projekt de facto jest tak samo ważny dla Polski, jak i dla mnie. Może nawet ważniejszy dla Polski.” (“This project is in fact as important for Poland as it is for me. Perhaps even more important for Poland.”) That statement establishes his expressed commitment; it does not independently establish the project’s current status. Forbes Polska, June 2026

Wealth rankings are snapshots that can shift with company valuations and the date and method used to estimate assets. The Forbes Polska reporting cited here provides a business history and descriptions of holdings, but it does not establish an authoritative net-worth figure current to 8 October 2026. It is therefore more accurate to explain how Sołowow built his fortune than to attach an undated dollar or złoty amount to the title “richest man in Poland.” Forbes Polska, wealth ranking
Quick Recap
Best Value
- From the acclaimed, award-winning author of Alexander Hamilton: here is the essential, endlessly engrossing biography of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.—the Jekyll-and-Hyde of American capitalism.
- In the course of his nearly 98 years, Rockefeller was known as both a rapacious robber baron, whose Standard Oil Company rode roughshod over an industry, and a philanthropist who donated money lavishly to universities and medical centers.
- He was the terror of his competitors, the bogeyman of reformers, the delight of caricaturists—and an utter enigma.
The business pattern behind the fortune
- Start with operating businesses: Sołowow recalled having construction activity and bringing PLI into public trading before his best-known industrial holdings.
- Use acquisitions to build scale: Cersanit, Barlinek and Dwory show how purchases and investments became routes into larger industrial ownership.
- Restructure and expand: Barlinek’s reorganization and export push, and the development of the chemical group, illustrate the work that followed ownership.
- Accept that outcomes vary: The Ineos Styrenics impairment is a clear counterexample to any claim that every deal succeeded.
- Look beyond legacy manufacturing: The SMR program signals a newer strategic ambition, but its reported schedules and budgets remain plans and estimates rather than established results.
