Journalist Christopher Dring introduced The Game Business on March 3, 2025, as a business-focused games publication backed by Geoff Keighley. Dring said Keighley offered to fund the project, but described it as a separate publication for which he was responsible—not part of The Game Awards. Its stated aim is to explain what is selling, changing, and struggling across the video game industry.

What The Game Business is

The Game Business is a business-to-business publication covering the video game industry through a website, podcasts, newsletters, videos, and events, according to its About page. Its stated focus is on market data, business analysis, and perspectives from industry leaders. The publication also says its described market data, interviews, podcasts, and newsletters are free to access.

Dring introduced the project in a founder-authored post on March 3, 2025. GamesBeat reported on March 24, 2025, that Dring had announced the brand with Keighley’s backing; that report was updated June 18, 2025. Those dates describe different milestones: the founder’s introduction and the later third-party report.

Who it is for and what it covers

Dring described an audience that extends beyond studio and publishing executives to people working across games and readers outside the industry who want to understand its business. The launch post framed the central questions as “What’s selling, what’s trending and what’s struggling?”

The subjects he outlined include:

  • Sales, market trends, and player behavior
  • Established and emerging platforms, along with distribution
  • Monetization and new markets
  • Policy and competition for people’s time

The emphasis is on the business forces shaping games, rather than only reviews or game announcements.

How it was meant to reach readers

At launch, Dring described a mix of audio, video, and written coverage. The details below are the plan announced in March 2025, not a confirmed description of the current production schedule.

  • The Game Business Show: video podcasts and interviews planned at roughly 30–45 minutes each, with a feature program and a news-and-analysis program.
  • Release cadence: two episodes a week, planned for Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Distribution: episodes would be available as podcasts and on YouTube, with shorter segments shared on social channels.
  • Newsletter and website: the newsletter would arrive by email and be readable on the site; written coverage would also be shared socially.

The publication’s archive contains news and show material dated in 2026, demonstrating activity at the time of review. The archive does not establish that the original Tuesday-and-Thursday schedule still applies.

Dring’s role and Keighley’s backing

The publication’s About page identifies Dring as its editorial lead and characterizes him as a 20-year veteran of games-business media. It says his career included nine years at UK weekly magazine MCV and more than eight years leading GamesIndustry.biz. These experience figures are the publication’s own account.

Dring said Keighley encouraged the project and offered to fund it. He also drew a boundary between the new publication and Keighley’s event: “Geoff may be backing it, but TGB is not part of The Game Awards (despite the acronym).” The About page likewise describes The Game Business as editorially independent. The available statements explain the backing in broad terms; they do not disclose an investment structure or other corporate arrangement.

What is—and is not—known about access and sponsorship

The About page says the publication’s described content is free and invites sponsorship and partnership inquiries. It does not establish a current paid tier, sponsor inventory, specific partnership offer, or affiliate arrangement. A free-access description should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every future product or event will have no charge.

The launch announcement and official description identify a digital publication and its content formats. They do not establish a print edition, publication-branded merchandise, or a related book or manual.

Why the launch matters to industry readers

The launch was positioned around a gap Dring saw in explaining the business behind games: how platforms, distribution, monetization, regulation, and player attention affect companies and markets. The combination of reporting, analysis, interviews, and data is intended to serve both industry professionals and curious readers. Whether that approach remains consistent over time is best judged from the publication’s ongoing coverage, rather than from the launch plan alone.
