Jack Altman announced a $275 million second fund for Alt Capital on September 16, 2025. The reported one-week fundraising timeline came from Altman’s account to The Wall Street Journal, as relayed by TechCrunch; it was not an independently audited measure of the raise. The fund’s status later changed: in February 2026, Bloomberg reported that Altman had joined Benchmark, most of Fund II’s capital would not be collected from investors, and Alt Capital would make no new investments.

What Altman announced in September 2025

Alt Capital was the solo-run venture firm Altman founded and led. Its second fund was announced at $275 million, up from the $150 million Fund I raised in early 2024, according to TechCrunch’s September 16, 2025 report.

TechCrunch said Altman told The Wall Street Journal the Fund II process took one week from start to finish. That describes the reported duration of the fundraising process, not a public accounting of when commitments were signed, when money was available, or how much capital was ultimately called.

How Fund I compares with the announced Fund II

Measure Alt Capital Fund I Alt Capital Fund II
Reported size $150 million $275 million announced
Timing Raised in early 2024 Announced September 16, 2025
Reported portfolio scope About 20 early-stage companies, according to TechCrunch’s 2025 report Altman had started investing from Fund II by the time of the February 2026 reporting; a final deployed-company count was not stated

The 2025 TechCrunch report cited David AI, a Y Combinator alumnus building datasets for speech models, and restaurant-software company Owner.com as Fund I examples. A later TechCrunch report, citing PitchBook, counted at least 52 Alt Capital investments across the firm. That later firm-wide figure is not a Fund I count and should not be compared with Fund I’s roughly 20 companies as though the figures measured the same portfolio. TechCrunch’s February 17, 2026 follow-up names Rippling, Antares Nuclear, and CompLabs among the firm’s investments.

What changed after Altman joined Benchmark

On February 17, 2026, Bloomberg reported that Altman had joined Benchmark as a general partner. Bloomberg said Altman had begun investing from Fund II, but that a majority of its capital would not be collected from investors and Alt Capital would make no new investments. Altman would retain board seats at companies he had backed, according to Bloomberg’s report.

TechCrunch also reported the Benchmark appointment and said Alt Capital teammates would follow Altman. It noted that the fate of Alt Capital and whether Benchmark had acquired its portfolio were unclear. The available reporting therefore does not establish that Benchmark acquired Alt Capital or its investments. Nor does it specify the legal treatment of capital that would not be collected.

What the one-week figure does—and does not—tell you

The one-week claim is notable as a description of a fast fundraising process, but it does not mean $275 million was necessarily transferred to the firm in that week. The announced size and the later report that most Fund II capital would not be collected concern different stages: the first is the fund’s announced size in September 2025, while the second describes its reported status after Altman’s move to Benchmark.

The reports do not provide Fund II’s investor roster, legal structure, investment terms, or the final amount actually collected. Readers should treat $275 million as the announced size, not as evidence that the full amount was ultimately funded or deployed.
