The often-cited $22 million drop was a comparison between the midpoints of two dated U.S. and Canada opening-weekend forecast ranges—not an exact revision issued by one tracker. Boxoffice Pro’s February 21, 2025 range implied a $75 million midpoint; a later range reported by Forbes implied $53 million. Snow White ultimately opened below that later estimate, with a reported $43 million domestic debut.
What the $22 million decline compares
Both figures were estimates of the film’s domestic opening weekend: U.S. and Canada, first three days. Boxoffice Pro published a $65 million–$85 million range on February 21, 2025. Its midpoint is $75 million. Forbes reported on March 17 that tracking cited from The Hollywood Reporter had fallen to roughly $50 million–$56 million, whose midpoint is $53 million. Subtracting the midpoints gives $22 million.
That calculation is useful shorthand, but it is not evidence that a single forecasting service announced a precise $22 million cut. It compares the centers of two ranges from different dates and reporting sources, and both remain pre-release estimates.
How forecasts changed before release
| Date reported | Source or tracker as reported | Domestic opening-weekend estimate |
|---|---|---|
| February 7, 2025 | The Quorum tracking, as reported by Deadline and summarized by Forbes | $63 million–$70 million |
| February 21, 2025 | Boxoffice Pro | $65 million–$85 million |
| March 16–17, 2025 | The Hollywood Reporter tracking, as reported by Forbes | About $50 million–$56 million |
The estimates were not a smooth, single-source time series: the early ranges came from different trackers, and the later figure was relayed by Forbes from The Hollywood Reporter. They also describe the domestic opening weekend, not worldwide receipts or the film’s full theatrical run. Forbes’s account is the source for the February 7 and later tracking figures; the February 21 range was published by Boxoffice Pro.

What happened at the box office
Disney’s live-action musical reimagining of its 1937 animated film opened theatrically on March 21, 2025. The Los Angeles Times reported a studio-estimated $43 million in the U.S. and Canada, $44 million overseas, and $87 million worldwide for the opening weekend. The domestic result was below the later $50 million–$56 million tracking range; the $87 million worldwide figure covers a different geography and should not be compared directly with domestic forecasts.
The Los Angeles Times also reported a B+ CinemaScore. That audience grade is a separate measure from box-office gross and does not by itself establish how the film performed over its full theatrical run.

Why the forecasts fell—and what is known about controversy
The dated reports show that expectations declined between the later-February and mid-March tracking snapshots. They do not establish a single cause for the movement. Controversies surrounding the film formed part of the pre-release coverage, but the Los Angeles Times said it was unclear how much they contributed to the opening. It would overstate the available evidence to present controversy as the demonstrated reason for either the lower tracking or the final result.
What the estimates say about financial performance
Published production-budget estimates varied, and the cited accounts excluded marketing costs. Forbes reported Variety’s estimate of $240 million before prints and advertising and a figure close to $270 million before marketing from The Numbers. The Los Angeles Times described production cost as an estimated $250 million before marketing. These are attributed estimates, not a settled final cost.

An opening weekend cannot establish whether a film ultimately made or lost money. The figures above do not provide a complete account of later theatrical revenue, distribution terms, marketing, or other costs, so they are not enough to calculate the studio’s final profit or loss.
