A complete setup must secure both the regularly used active leaf and the inactive leaf, and it must match the doors’ material, preparation, dimensions and operation. The options below are manufacturer examples—not a tested ranking—so check the exact model and configuration before buying.
What hardware does a French-door pair need?
One leaf is the active leaf, opened and closed in normal use; the other is the inactive leaf. A lock on the active leaf alone does not necessarily retain the inactive one. A common arrangement combines an active-leaf handle and lock with top and bottom flush bolts, or uses a compatible system that secures the passive leaf as part of its operation. [FrenchDoors.com guide]
Before choosing a product, identify how the pair is built: whether it has a floating mullion, a fixed meeting stile, or another arrangement can determine which passive-leaf mechanism will work. Confirm the strikes or keeps and the head jamb and threshold can accept the intended locking points.
Which French-door lock types should you compare?
Flush bolts for the inactive leaf
Flush bolts are manually operated or integrated bolts that retain the inactive leaf by engaging the head jamb and threshold. The FrenchDoors.com guide identifies the Ives by Schlage 261B5 and describes using a bolt at both the top and bottom. It is an accessory, not a complete lock for the pair; confirm the door can accept it and that the strikes align. [FrenchDoors.com guide]

Multipoint locks
A multipoint mechanism engages more than one point along a door edge. ERA’s French-door system is specified for flush French timber doors and has a 45 mm backset. Its leaflet lists forged hooks and a central deadbolt, with optional shoot bolts; ERA describes the primary lock engaging a passive mechanism. The leaflet also specifies a 22 mm central deadbolt throw and a 10-year mechanical guarantee. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative results. [ERA product information]
ERA’s product leaflet states: “Suitable for securing flush French timber doors.” That suitability claim is specific to the described system and door type; it does not establish fit for every French-door pair.
Passive-leaf locks and shoot bolts
Yale describes its French Door YS170 for systems with a floating mullion. It drives shoot bolts into the top and bottom of the frame to secure the inactive leaf. Yale lists 35 mm and 45 mm backset variants and a PZ92 mm center case. The same product page specifies a 50,000-cycle endurance test and a 10-year mechanical guarantee; those figures are manufacturer claims, not evidence of superiority over other products. [Yale YS170]

Single-point deadbolts and mortise locks
A deadbolt secures one point. A mortise lock has a case recessed into a pocket in the door edge and can combine latch and deadbolt functions. These architectures may suit some prepared doors, but they are not interchangeable with multipoint systems without checking the door edge, existing pocket and hardware. In either case, verify how the inactive leaf is retained; securing one leaf at one point does not by itself secure the pair. [FrenchDoors.com guide]
Hinge-side supplemental retrofit
ABUS presents the TAS112 as a supplemental retrofit for compatible French doors. ABUS states that it has VdS and DIN certification and more than one tonne of load resistance. The manufacturer specifies a rebate range of 0–30 mm and a maximum door opening of 90 degrees. These limits and claims apply to that product; check the exact door geometry and whether the restricted opening suits the household. [ABUS TAS112]
How do you choose between the options?
Use the locking arrangement that matches the door pair and its existing preparation. The examples below describe different roles and configurations, not equivalent products in a performance contest.

Another Yale option, the Lockmaster, is specified by Yale with a minimum 100,000-cycle operational lifespan and BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 4 corrosion resistance. Those figures are manufacturer specifications for that product, not a directly comparable test against the YS170 or ERA system. [Yale Lockmaster]
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you measure before buying?
Product names such as “French door lock” do not establish fit. Record the existing configuration and compare it with the exact manufacturer variant and its installation information.
- Mark the active and inactive leaves, and note whether the pair uses a floating or fixed mullion.
- Identify door material, frame/profile, handing and whether the door opens inward or outward.
- Record the existing faceplate, lock model and door-edge preparation, including any mortise pocket.
- Measure backset and center-case/PZ spacing; check the faceplate and case dimensions against the replacement.
- Locate existing strike or keep positions and confirm the jamb and threshold can accept any new locking points.
- Check that the selected mechanism’s operation is practical for daily use and does not compromise safe egress or local requirements.
Dimensions are model-specific: Yale lists 35 mm and 45 mm backsets for the YS170, while ERA specifies a 45 mm backset for its French-door system. Do not transfer a measurement from one product to another. For a complex replacement, follow the manufacturer’s installation information or consult a qualified door-hardware professional.

How should you interpret security and certification claims?
Multipoint engagement, deadbolt throw, cycle endurance and corrosion resistance describe different aspects of hardware; none alone proves that a lock is the strongest choice for a particular door. Manufacturer specifications and certifications apply to the stated model and configuration. They do not establish how the complete door, frame, keeps and installation will perform as a system.
The available product information does not provide controlled, independent comparative testing across these options, so there is no substantiated overall winner. Compare the leaf or leaves secured, locking points, fit, installation needs, operation and any certification claim for the exact variant and market. Availability and specifications can change; check the manufacturer’s current product page before purchase.
