Dropshipping with Shopify: A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started

Shopify dropshipping lets a supplier ship products directly to your customers, but you remain responsible for the store, customer service, costs, and applicable rules.

You can run a Shopify store without stocking products yourself: a supplier holds the inventory and ships orders directly to your customers. But dropshipping does not outsource your role as the seller. You still choose products, set expectations, handle customer service, manage refunds, and meet the business and tax rules that apply where you operate and sell.

How Shopify dropshipping works

The basic order flow is straightforward:

  1. A customer orders and pays through your Shopify store.
  2. You send the order details to your supplier, either through an integrated workflow or by managing the order directly.
  3. The supplier packs and ships the product to the customer.
  4. You monitor delivery and respond to questions, complaints, return requests, and refund requests.

Because the supplier controls fulfillment, their stock accuracy, packing, and delivery affect the promise your store makes. Shopify’s beginner guide to dropshipping explains the model and the merchant’s continuing customer-service role; its Help Center guidance covers store responsibilities and supplier practices.

Can you dropship on Shopify with no inventory?

Yes. The supplier can retain the stock and ship each order, so you generally do not need to buy inventory in advance or operate a warehouse. That can reduce the cash tied up in unsold products and the need for storage, but it does not make the business cost-free or risk-free. You may still pay for the store, a domain, supplier products or services, and marketing; costs vary with your choices and location.

You also have less direct control over availability, packaging, and delivery than a seller who fulfills orders themselves. If a product is out of stock or arrives late, the customer will usually look to your store for an explanation and a solution.

Choose a product and supplier before building around them

Start with a focused niche and investigate whether there is a plausible customer need, how competitors present similar products, and whether the economics work. Avoid choosing a product on its apparent popularity alone: supplier reliability, shipping, returns, and total costs all affect the customer experience and your margin.

Compare Shopify’s three sourcing routes

Shopify’s 2026 beginner overview describes three ways to source products: Shopify Collective, a third-party dropshipping app connected to the store, or a direct relationship with a supplier that you manage independently. No route is universally best; assess the actual supplier and workflow available to you.

Route What it means What to check
Shopify Collective Shopify’s built-in product sourcing network. Product fit, supplier terms and reliability, shipping coverage, costs, and how orders and returns are handled.
Third-party supplier app An app connects your Shopify store with one or more suppliers. Supplier reputation, app workflow, stock updates, order tracking, fees, delivery estimates, and return arrangements.
Direct supplier relationship You find and work with a supplier outside a sourcing app. Communication, order-data transfer, payment and fulfillment terms, tracking, geographic reach, and who handles returns.

These route descriptions reflect Shopify’s 2026 overview. Verify current availability and terms for the specific supplier or service you intend to use.

Vet the supplier and test the product

Before listing an item, review supplier communication, product quality, stock availability, processing and delivery times, total landed cost, return handling, and the places they can ship. Shopify recommends placing an order to check real processing and delivery times. A sample or test order can also help you judge the product and packaging before customers do. Keep checking performance after launch; one successful order does not guarantee consistent fulfillment.

How to start a Shopify dropshipping business

  1. Decide whether the model suits you. It can reduce inventory handling, but you must be prepared to manage suppliers, customer questions, complaints, and returns.
  2. Choose a focused niche and research competitors. Look at product selection, pricing, delivery promises, and how other stores explain the offer. Use that work to identify a clear reason for customers to choose your store.
  3. Find and vet suppliers. Check quality, availability, delivery, geographic reach, order tracking, and return procedures. Test an order before relying on a supplier’s stated delivery estimates.
  4. Select products and calculate prices. Include supplier charges, platform and domain costs, marketing, and other costs relevant to your business. Leave room for customer-service and fulfillment problems rather than treating the supplier’s product price as your only expense.
  5. Build the Shopify store. Write accurate product descriptions and make processing, shipping, and refund information easy to find. Do not promise a delivery speed or product feature you have not verified.
  6. Prepare your business details and finances. Investigate local business registration, tax, accounts, and recordkeeping requirements before taking orders.
  7. Choose a marketing approach and test it carefully. Track what you spend and whether it brings customers who purchase at a margin that can support the business.

This is a planning sequence, not a guarantee of sales or profit. Shopify’s beginner guide offers a similar sequence of decisions, supplier research, store setup, and marketing.

Work out whether the economics make sense

There is no reliable universal startup budget or profit forecast for a Shopify dropshipping store. Costs depend on the Shopify plan and domain you choose, supplier charges, products, market, marketing decisions, and location. Shopify’s dropshipping materials identify the platform, domain, supplier, and marketing as possible cost categories; they do not establish what a particular beginner will spend or earn.

Before listing a product, compare the price customers will pay with the costs of getting and selling it. Account for supplier charges and shipping, platform and domain expenses, marketing, and the possibility of refunds or other service costs. Competition can pressure prices, while delayed shipping or inconsistent quality can increase complaints and hurt repeat business. Treat any profit projection as an assumption to test, not an expected outcome.

Set customer expectations and understand your obligations

Dropshipping changes who stores and ships the product, not who sells it to the customer. Shopify’s Help Center says sellers must comply with the laws and regulations that apply to product sales as if they were retailers. The rules depend on where your business operates and where your customers are, so Shopify’s platform guidance is not a substitute for advice on your situation.

Make shipping, processing, and refund information clear

Publish current, publicly accessible information about processing, shipping, and refunds. Customers should be able to see delivery estimates and additional charges, including customs charges where applicable, before completing a purchase. If an order is delayed or changes, communicate that promptly rather than leaving the customer to discover it through a tracking page. Shopify sets out these disclosure expectations in its dropshipping Help Center guidance.

Check local registration, tax, and cross-border rules

Before launch, check whether you need to register the business, collect or remit taxes, and keep particular records where you operate and sell. Shopify’s business finance guidance recommends separating personal and business finances and investigating local requirements. It gives a US Employer Identification Number (EIN) as an example that some businesses may need for certain activities; an EIN is not a universal requirement for every seller or country.

Cross-border sales need additional care. For example, Shopify’s EU tax guidance discusses VAT, customs, and the Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) in relevant cases, including goods shipped into the EU from outside it. Do not assume that a single VAT or customs treatment applies to every product or seller. Check the rules for your goods, destination, and business location with the relevant official authority or a qualified tax professional.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
