No. The apology circulating under Astronomer CEO Andy Byron’s name was fabricated, not a statement he made. Astronomer’s senior vice president of marketing, Mark Wheeler, told AFP that it came from a troll account and was fake; the Associated Press separately reported that the company described it as fake and traced it to a parody account.

Was the viral apology letter real?

No. On July 18, 2025, Astronomer senior vice president of marketing Mark Wheeler told AFP by email: “It did originate from a troll account and is indeed fake.” AFP also found no record of Byron publishing the statement himself. The Associated Press independently reported Astronomer’s description of the letter as fake and said it came from a clearly labeled parody account. AFP Associated Press

The letter began circulating online on July 17, 2025. It purported to apologize to Byron’s family and Astronomer employees and referred to a private moment becoming public without consent. AFP reported that it ended with a lyric from Coldplay’s “Fix You.” Those were claims in a fabricated statement, not verified words from Byron.

Where did the fake statement come from?

AFP identified the apparent source as the X account @PeterEnisCBS. The account purported to belong to a CBS News reporter and had at one point been labeled parody; AFP reported that it was later suspended. It was not a verified Astronomer channel. The company’s denial was given to AFP by Wheeler in an email on July 18, 2025.

What happened at the Coldplay concert?

At a Coldplay concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, a man and woman appeared hugging on the stadium jumbotron. They moved apart after noticing they were on screen. Chris Martin joked: “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”

The Associated Press reported that the pair were Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s chief people officer, Kristin Cabot; Astronomer later confirmed their identities to AP. The video and Martin’s joke do not establish that the pair were having an affair. The verified facts about the clip should not be confused with the unsupported “cheating” allegation.

What did Astronomer do after the video went viral?

Astronomer’s corporate actions were separate from the fake personal apology. AP reported that the company placed Byron on leave and that its board opened a formal investigation. The following day, Astronomer announced Byron’s resignation and named co-founder and chief product officer Pete DeJoy interim CEO while it searched for a successor.

Astronomer said in a LinkedIn post, as quoted by AP: “Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.” This was the company’s statement, not an apology issued personally by Byron.
