For prospectors prioritizing depth, Minelab positions the GPZ 7000 as its deep-gold flagship, but there is no independent, apples-to-apples evidence establishing one detector as best for every goldfield. The right choice depends on target size, ground mineralisation, how far you need to carry the detector, water exposure, local price and warranty support. Minelab’s “up to 40% more depth” claim for the GPZ 7000 is a manufacturer comparison, not a universal result.
What is the best metal detector for deep gold?
The strongest supported answer is the Minelab GPZ 7000 if your priority is Minelab’s maximum-depth positioning for natural gold, especially medium-to-larger nuggets and highly mineralised or variable ground. The company says its ZVT technology offers up to 40% more depth than previous GPX Series detectors, using comparisons it describes as indicative and based on laboratory measurements and field testing undertaken by and for Minelab. That figure should not be treated as a guaranteed increase for your targets, soil or settings. Minelab’s GPZ 7000 product page and its 2025 GPZ 7000 brochure provide the manufacturer’s claim and its qualification.
That makes the GPZ 7000 a candidate for serious depth-focused prospecting, not an automatic best buy. Its official specification lists a weight of 3.32 kg (7.32 lb), and its GPZ14 Super-D coil is waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft); this is a coil rating, not a statement that the whole detector can be submerged. The high purchase price and carry weight matter as much as headline depth if you cover long distances or prospect in difficult terrain. Minelab’s technical specifications list the details.
How the listed gold detectors compare
Minelab’s US gold-prospecting catalog lists the five models below. Prices are the displayed US catalog prices accessed October 8, 2026, not global or guaranteed current prices. The source does not provide an equivalent, independent depth comparison across all five models, so the table separates established facts from what you should verify for your conditions. #1 Best Overall
- 13" WATERPROOF DD COIL - In general, the electromagnetic pulses from larger coils can penetrate more deeply than those from smaller coils. And larger coils also help you cover ground more quickly since every sweep of the detector goes over a larger area. The coil is a “double D”. Double D coils produce a wide electromagnetic field, again permitting more ground to be covered in a given amount of time. That can allow more precise pinpointing of the location of a find.
- 3 PROFESSIONAL SEARCH WAYS - ① ALL METALS - Notifies you whenever it sees any metal, and helps you search for all kinds of metal objects. ② DISC - If you don't want to waste time with a low value metal, such as iron, then you can use the DISC to eliminate iron, the detector will not make a sound when the iron is detected. ③ PINPOINT - This metal finder enables you pinpoint the target to save your time. The closer you get to the target, the louder the detector will sound.
- INTUITIVE LCD BACKLIGHT CONTROL DISPLAY - One of the most important parts of a gold detector professional is its display LCD screen. It’s where the metal detector shows you the frequency of an object that’s been detected—a clue as to what type of metal it’s made of. And it’s where you get a readout of the target’s approximate depth, and can adjust the detector’s sensitivity. This metal detector professional has a large LCD screen that’s easy to read even in bright sun.
- PINPOINT & HEADPHONE - The metal detector with pinpoint will help locate the target metal quickly. You only need to press the P/P button once, it will keep pinpointing (Others need to keep pushing the P/P button). Our metal detector can be used with headphones, which make it easier to hear the beeps and whines that indicate a discovery—especially at the beach, where the noise of the waves can drown out quiet signals. Many dedicated hobbyists prefer wired headsets for their reliability.
- ADJUSTABLE STEM & CUSTOMER SERVICE - 39.37" to 49.21" adjustable stem is suitable for kids and adults. This metal detector is considerably more comfortable to hold, due to the combination of an ergonomic rubberized handle and a long forearm rest. The gold finder detector is less tiring to use, especially after some time. We provide you with 24/7 responsive customer service. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any problems. We are always here whenever you need us.

What the GPZ 7000’s depth claim does—and does not—mean
Minelab says the GPZ 7000 offers “up to 40 per cent more depth than previous GPX Series detectors.” The 2025 brochure characterizes the comparison as indicative, based on laboratory measurements and field testing undertaken by and for Minelab, and specifies comparisons involving the GPX 5000, SDC 2300 and GPZ 7000 coils. This is a manufacturer-produced comparison, not an independent test across brands or a promise that a specific nugget will be detected 40% deeper in your ground. Minelab’s product information describes ZVT, a Super-D coil, ground-balance options, GPS and mapping features, and noise cancellation. These are relevant features to examine, but they do not replace a controlled comparison using your target size, soil and search method. The available manufacturer sources do not establish an objectively deepest detector across all serious gold-prospecting brands.
Choose by target, ground, terrain and total cost
Match the detector to the gold you are seeking
The manufacturer characterizes the GPZ 7000 as strongest on medium-to-larger nuggets, while also retaining sensitivity to smaller, shallower targets. If your priority is very small gold, do not infer from the GPZ’s flagship depth claim that it is necessarily the right tool for every small-target situation. Confirm a model’s intended target range and test it against representative targets where possible.

Account for mineralised and variable ground
Minelab specifically positions the GPZ 7000 for highly mineralised or variable ground. Actual results still depend on the local conditions and setup. Ask a knowledgeable local dealer or experienced prospectors what the ground is like in the area you intend to search, and seek a demonstration on representative soil rather than relying on a general depth figure.
Put weight and water exposure into the budget
The GPZ 7000’s official 3.32 kg (7.32 lb) weight may be significant over a long day, particularly when combined with other carried equipment. Its coil is rated waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft); do not read that as a whole-detector submersion rating. For the SDC 2300 or another model, check its own specifications before planning to search in water.

Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Define the gold you are seeking: small, shallow targets or medium-to-larger nuggets where depth is a priority.
- Identify the local ground conditions and get model-specific guidance for mineralised or variable soil.
- Compare weight against the distance and terrain you expect to cover.
- Check the detector’s own water rating; distinguish a waterproof coil from a waterproof control unit.
- Get a current local quote and confirm exactly which coil and accessories are included.
- Read the warranty terms for your region and confirm where service is available.
- Treat manufacturer depth claims as qualified comparisons, not guaranteed field results; seek a demonstration using representative targets and ground if possible.
