Best Shoes for Race Walking: How to Choose the Right Pair

No one shoe suits every race walker. Compare fit, toe-box space, forefoot flex and arch support, then check the exact model’s competition approval if you race.

There is no single best shoe for every race walker. Prioritize a comfortable fit, room for your toes, a heel that stays secure, and a sole that bends under the ball of your foot while supporting your arch. If you compete, check that the exact shoe model is approved for your event; comfort and competition eligibility are separate questions.

What to look for in a race-walking shoe

Fit that feels right immediately

Try shoes with the socks you expect to wear, and fit your larger foot. Your toes should have room to move and spread, while your heel remains secure without slipping. Shoes should feel comfortable at the first fitting rather than requiring a break-in period. These are general fit recommendations from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, not findings from a race-walking-specific clinical trial: How to Select Athletic Shoes.

Flex under the forefoot, support through the arch

Racewalk.com’s specialist guide recommends a shoe that flexes beneath the ball of the foot for push-off while retaining support through the arch. It also recommends a roomy toe box and a supportive heel counter. These are useful features to assess when trying shoes, not a universal prescription for one shoe shape: Selecting Proper Race Walking Shoes.

Choose shape by trying shoes, not by diagnosing your stride online

Foot shape and motion differ, and the specialist guide discusses how shoe shape may relate to a walker’s movement. It also notes that selecting the right shape can be difficult and suggests professional help. Treat that as fitting guidance—not a diagnosis you can reliably make from a short article or a single description of your stride. A low heel is often discussed in race-walking advice, but no one heel profile or heel-to-toe drop is established here as best for everyone.

How to compare shoes before buying

Use the same practical checks for a race-walking-specific shoe, a walking shoe, or a running shoe you are considering:

  • Immediate comfort: Does the shoe feel comfortable now, without expecting it to become comfortable after a break-in period?
  • Heel security: Does your heel stay in place as you walk?
  • Toe-box room: Can your toes move freely without crowding?
  • Sole movement: Does the shoe flex beneath the ball of your foot while still feeling supportive under the arch?
  • Use and distance: Does the shoe suit the training or competition use and distance you have in mind?
  • Practical fit: Is the shoe available in the size and shape that fits you, at a price you are willing to pay?
  • Event approval: If you will race under rules that require approved footwear, is this exact model permitted for your discipline?

A suitable lightweight walking or running shoe may work; a race-walking-specific model is another option. Neither label substitutes for trying the shoe on and checking how it fits and moves with your foot.

Race-walking-specific shoes to investigate

Reshod’s shop currently lists the Coach Carmen Race Walk Shoe and Pushover styles. The retailer describes the Coach Carmen as a lightweight, low-profile race shoe and provides descriptions for Pushover versions. Those are retailer descriptions, not independent evidence of performance, durability, injury prevention, or fit for a particular walker. Check the current Reshod shop for the product details, stock, and pricing available when you shop. Racewalk.com describes Reshod as a reasonable place to start for specialist shoes, while cautioning that one model cannot be recommended for everyone.

These examples are options to compare, not a tested ranking. No specific shoe was physically tested for this article, and no individual Amazon listing or current Amazon availability has been verified. If you want to search Amazon, use the phrase “race walking shoes,” then verify the exact listing, model, size, and availability yourself.

Check competition approval separately from fit

For competition, do not assume that a shoe is legal because it is comfortable, marketed for race walking, or appeared on an old list. World Athletics’ Book of Rules lists C2.1A Athletic Shoe Regulations as effective 20 April 2026; check the current document and the applicable shoe-check list for your event and date: World Athletics Book of Rules.

World Athletics stated in its 6 June 2024 shoe-check announcement: “It is the responsibility of athletes to make sure that the shoes they are wearing in competition are approved and can be worn in the specific discipline.” Approval can vary by discipline, so check the exact shoe model rather than relying on the brand or category name: World Athletics shoe-check application announcement.

USA Race Walking says only models listed as permitted for race walking may be used when world-ranking points, team places, or records are at stake. It also warns that violations can lead to disqualification and loss of results. Review its Shoe Control guidance and the rules for the specific event; requirements and applicable lists can change.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

There is no established universal winner or robust, dated population statistic here comparing race-walking shoe performance or injury outcomes. A specialist guide mentions a shoe-preference survey, but the available page does not establish a representative sample, so its percentages should not be generalized to all walkers. An older World Athletics-hosted article by Reg Wells poses the question “What should you look for in a satisfactory race walking shoe?” as expert discussion, not as a measured survey of current preferences: These shoes are made for walking.
