The best choice depends on how you want to carry lunch: built into the backpack, in a removable insulated bag, or in a separate bag bundled with the pack. Bentgo is the clearest fit for an integrated compartment; MATEIN and Champion offer removable lunch bags, while Osprey’s option pairs a backpack with a separate lunch bag. Compare the listed measurements with your own food container before choosing—published dimensions alone do not guarantee a fit.

Which backpack with a lunch compartment fits your routine?
Bentgo: an integrated insulated compartment
Bentgo’s adult-oriented backpack puts the insulated lunch compartment at the bottom, with a separate 15-inch padded laptop sleeve, organizer pockets, water-bottle pockets, and a trolley sleeve. The manufacturer lists the backpack at 13 × 18 × 9 in and 1.5 lb, with nylon EVA and polyester materials. Bentgo says the compartment is intended for a Bentgo lunch box and designed to help the pack maintain its structure; that is product copy, not a comparative test. Its page also lists a two-year manufacturer warranty, so check the current terms for coverage.
MATEIN: a removable lunch bag
MATEIN’s insulated lunch bag can be removed from the 28 L backpack. The manufacturer also lists a wide-opening main compartment, organizer pockets, a side napkin pocket, an anti-theft back pocket, ergonomic straps, and a luggage strap. The cited manufacturer page is a UK page that displays a USD price; do not assume that price or availability applies in another region. MATEIN says the lunch bag is hand-wash only, so confirm the current care instructions before cleaning it.

The listing identifies 300D polyester but does not provide the lunch box’s dimensions or a laptop screen-size fit. Check the current listing and compare the lunch box with the child’s container before purchasing.
Osprey: a backpack and separate lunch-bag bundle
The cited Osprey UK page pairs a 24 L Axis backpack with a separate 5 L Hydro Flask insulated lunch bag. Osprey lists the backpack at 18.1 × 13 × 9.4 in and 1.64 lb, and says it fits most 16-inch laptops. The lunch bag is listed at 9.5 × 9 × 6 in and 0.45 lb. Osprey says to use an ice pack, sold separately, and describes the bag as fully lined with welded seams for easier cleaning. Its claim that food stays fresh for hours with an ice pack is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled food-temperature test.

Check fit before you buy
Do not rely on a lunch bag’s outside measurements—or on a container’s nominal dimensions alone—to predict fit. Interior space, shape, and the zipper opening can limit what goes inside. Measure the container you actually use and, where possible, verify the usable compartment dimensions or try the combination before committing.
- For an integrated compartment: compare your container with Bentgo’s listed 12.8 × 8.3 × 3.0 in compartment.
- For a removable lunch bag: compare it with MATEIN’s listed 9 × 7 × 6 in bag. Champion does not state lunch-box dimensions in the cited description, so confirm them on the current listing.
- For the separate Osprey bundle: compare your container with the lunch bag’s listed 9.5 × 9 × 6 in dimensions, and account for the separately purchased ice pack.
- For electronics: compare the laptop’s screen size and overall dimensions with the manufacturer’s fit description. A stated screen-size fit is not a guarantee for every laptop, since device dimensions and protective cases differ.
Choose based on how you carry lunch
- Choose an integrated compartment if you prefer lunch storage built into one pack; Bentgo is the option here with that design.
- Choose a removable lunch bag if you want to carry or clean the lunch bag separately; MATEIN and Champion use this arrangement, for adult everyday use and youth school use respectively.
- Choose a separate bundle if you do not need the lunch bag built into the backpack; Osprey’s cited bundle keeps the two pieces physically separate.
These are design distinctions, not evidence that one arrangement is more comfortable, durable, or effective at keeping food cold. The product information cited here does not establish independent durability results or verified food temperatures.
