The best everyday backpack is the one that fits your actual laptop and daily load, carries comfortably, and suits the places you use it. Start with fit and function—then weigh appearance, weather protection, and price. The Fjällräven Räven 28 is one roomy, organized commuter option, not a universal winner.
How to choose a backpack for everyday use
Choose for what you carry and where you go, rather than buying by appearance or a nominal laptop screen size. Lenovo’s laptop-backpack buying guide recommends considering laptop dimensions, storage needs, and your body frame.
- Measure your laptop. Check its actual dimensions against the sleeve’s stated limits. A screen-size label alone does not confirm that the computer will fit.
- List your regular load. Include work or school items, chargers, water, and anything else you carry most days. Choose enough capacity for that load without making the pack awkwardly oversized.
- Check sleeve placement and padding. Confirm the laptop compartment is padded and positioned in a way that works for your commute and how you access the bag.
- Assess carry comfort. Look for padded shoulder straps and a supportive, ventilated back panel, particularly if you walk or take transit for long stretches. Lenovo puts it simply: “Comfort is key, especially if you carry your backpack for extended periods.”
- Match protection to exposure. Water-resistant fabric may help with light rain or spills, but it does not establish that a pack is waterproof. Consider how exposed your bag will be and whether you need more protection.
- Consider the setting. Think about whether the bag needs to look at home in an office, on campus, on transit, or in casual settings. A style you like should still work with your daily routine.
How much capacity do you need?
Lenovo describes common laptop-backpack capacities as ranging from 15 L to more than 30 L. A smaller pack may suit a laptop and a few essentials; a larger one can accommodate a fuller daily load. Those ranges are a guide, not a guarantee of usable space: pocket layout and the shape of your items matter too.
Before choosing a volume, group the things you carry on a typical day and check whether the bag gives them practical places to go. A large main compartment is useful for bulky items, while smaller pockets can keep accessories organized. A bag that holds everything only when tightly packed may be inconvenient, while unused capacity can make it feel oversized.

One commuter option: Fjällräven Räven 28
Fjällräven lists the Räven 28 as a 28 L backpack with a padded laptop sleeve for computers up to 15 inches. Its official product page describes a large main compartment, zippered inside security pocket, front compartment with mesh organizers, fleece-lined top pocket, and side pockets. It also has a padded air-mesh back panel and comfortable shoulder straps.
The pack’s listed shell is G-1000 HeavyDuty, made from 65% recycled polyester and 35% organic cotton. Fjällräven calls the material water resistant, windproof, breathable, and quick-drying. Those are manufacturer descriptions; they do not mean the bag is waterproof.

Travel + Leisure’s commuter-backpack guide, updated April 7, 2026, named the Räven 28 its “Best Overall” commuter backpack. The guide says Travel + Leisure evaluated 221 backpacks and assessed capacity, organization, design, portability, durability, and value. Its reviewer praised the Räven’s organization and carry comfort but found it “not as water resistant as it claims.” That observation comes from Travel + Leisure’s review, not testing by this publication.
The Räven 28 is therefore a candidate for someone who wants a relatively roomy, compartmentalized commuter bag and whose laptop fits the sleeve. Its stated 15-inch limit is not a substitute for checking your computer’s dimensions, and the review’s water-resistance finding is worth considering if regular rain exposure is part of your routine.

What to compare before you buy
- Capacity and load: Does the volume suit your everyday essentials without excessive unused space?
- Laptop fit: Are your computer’s dimensions within the sleeve limit, and is the sleeve padded and conveniently placed?
- Comfort: Are the shoulder straps padded, and does the back panel feel suitable for longer carries?
- Organization and access: Do the pockets keep your regular items organized, and can you reach them easily?
- Weather protection: Is the stated protection appropriate for your exposure? Do not treat “water resistant” as equivalent to waterproof.
- Appearance: Does the design fit the settings where you will wear it, from work to casual use?
- Value: Compare the bag’s features and materials with its current price. Prices, colors, and availability can change, so check the live listing before buying.
