Ontario’s ticket resale cap is in effect: a ticket cannot be offered for resale above the original total price paid to the primary seller. That means the limit is not necessarily the ticket’s base “face value.” Ticketmaster’s removal of some Ontario resale listings and notice that customers could relist after marketplace updates was reported on April 24, 2026; “next week” was the timing given then, not a current upcoming change.
How Ontario’s resale price cap works
Ontario’s Bill 97 amended the Ticket Sales Act, 2017. It prohibits a person from offering a ticket for secondary sale above the total price paid when it was bought from the primary seller. It also prohibits a platform from facilitating a sale above that limit. The rule applies to tickets for live events and to resale platforms facilitating those sales. The Act

The relevant benchmark is the original total price, including the base ticket price, fees, and service charges. “Face value” can be misleading if it refers only to the base price. A resale platform may still charge its standard service fee, and applicable taxes may affect the buyer’s final payment. Ontario’s consumer guide
What sellers and resale platforms must do
- Show the original ticket price and the resale price.
- Itemize applicable costs associated with the secondary sale.
- Provide proof of the original price to the platform before it facilitates the listing.
- Platforms must prepare and retain specified records.
These disclosure and proof requirements help establish whether a listing stays within the cap; they are distinct from the price limit itself. The Act

Why Ticketmaster removed some Ontario resale listings
On April 24, 2026, The Canadian Press reported that Ticketmaster had removed some Ontario resale tickets while updating its resale marketplace. The company’s spokesperson, Shabnum Durrani, said affected customers were being notified and would be able to relist the tickets the following week after the updates. The report also said Ticketmaster told sellers that listings for events that weekend needed to comply with the law. It did not establish the exact date when the platform completed its update. The Canadian Press report
The removal was a reported platform response to the new requirements, not evidence that Ontario’s current cap is still about to begin. Listing availability and marketplace policies can vary by event and change over time.

How to assess an Ontario resale listing
Compare tickets for the same event by seat or location, then check the original total price against the resale price. Review fees, service charges, and taxes as separate parts of the amount you would pay. A listing at the legal maximum is not automatically good value, and a compliant listing does not guarantee that tickets will be available.

Ontario announced that increased administrative penalties took effect June 10, 2026. The government said repeat business offenders could face administrative penalties of up to $25,000, compared with the previous maximum of $10,000. The release also said enforcement actions would be published on the Consumer Beware List; compliance orders and court charges are separate tools described by the province. The policy is intended to protect consumers from inflated resale prices. In the April report, SeatGeek warned that the cap could reduce access to high-demand events and make season-ticket ownership more expensive for some resellers. Experts also raised concerns about enforcement if primary sellers do not disclose original seat prices and about informal resale channels. Those are stakeholder and expert concerns, not established outcomes. The sources cited here do not provide a verified estimate of the cap’s effect on ticket prices, resale volume, or attendance.
