When and where did the strikes happen?
The strike action unfolded in waves across cities and properties. More than 10,000 hotel workers had walked out over Labor Day weekend, the Associated Press reported on September 25, 2024, with most of those initial strikes ending after two or three days. That is an early-wave figure, not a count of workers still on strike later in September. Fast Company, citing the Associated Press, reported the figure.
On September 24, about 2,000 workers at Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu began an open-ended strike at 5 a.m. The Associated Press report said that walkout brought the number on strike at Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott hotels in Honolulu, San Diego and San Francisco to more than 4,000. The more-than-4,000 count describes workers on strike at that point, not the total number who had participated in the earlier Labor Day weekend walkouts. These are figures reported contemporaneously, not independently audited totals. The report also details the Honolulu walkout.
In the Bay Area, about 1,500 members of UNITE HERE Local 2 were on strike in San Francisco, with other workers in San Mateo County and San Jose, according to Piedmont Exedra’s September 23 report. The union’s September 2024 press roundup indexes coverage from cities affected by the wider wave.

What were workers asking for?
Honolulu
Workers at Hilton Hawaiian Village sought higher wages, more manageable workloads and reversal of pandemic-era cuts, including limited daily room cleaning. Housekeeper Estella Fontanilla told the Associated Press, “I am on strike again, and this time I am ready to stay on strike for as long as it takes to win.” The report describes the workers’ demands and the walkout.
Bay Area
Bay Area workers’ reported demands included higher wages, better health benefits and relief from painful workloads. Local 2 president Lizzy Tapia said, “The hotel industry is recovering while workers and guests are getting left behind.” Hyatt’s head of labor relations for the Americas, Michael D’Angelo, said the company had a history of offering competitive local wages and benefits, including health care at little to no cost and retirement savings. The comments appeared in Piedmont Exedra’s report. Demands and bargaining proposals varied by local negotiations; they should not be treated as one identical contract platform for all three chains.

How could a strike affect hotel guests?
At the start of the Honolulu walkout, the extent of service disruption was unclear. UNITE HERE warned that hotels might suspend services while operating with skeleton staffing. The union cited conditions during earlier strikes—including unavailable daily housekeeping, towels and linens accumulating in hallways, visible trash, closed bars and restaurants, and reduced pool hours. Those were examples the union attributed to earlier actions, not confirmed conditions at every hotel in the 2024 wave. The Associated Press report covered the uncertainty and the union’s warning.
For a planned stay, the practical implication is property-specific: a chain name alone does not establish whether a particular hotel was affected or which services were available. Check the hotel’s current service notices and contact the property about the services that matter to your trip.

Does this refer to a current strike?
No. This headline describes the 2024 strike wave. A separate September 2026 report from the Chicago Sun-Times said UNITE HERE Local 1 members voted to authorize a strike after contracts with 46 hotels expired on August 31, while negotiations continued. An authorization vote means workers could strike; it does not itself mean they walked out. That Chicago labor dispute is distinct from the 2024 action.
