Accounts of the label’s beginnings describe different phases. Vogue says Lopez launched Luar Zepol in 2011 and dropped “Zepol” in 2019; British Vogue describes him as launching Luar in 2017 after leaving Hood By Air. Why is the bag called Ana, and what inspired its design?
The brand spells the product “Ana,” while Lopez says “Anna” when explaining the family name in his Vogue interview. He describes naming it for his mother, both grandmothers, his sister and other important women in his family. The name gathers those family connections into the design rather than pointing to only one person.

The bag combines two distinct references. Lopez connects the circular top handle to his grandmother and the Mod era, saying, “I wanted to, like, kind of represent the mod era of, like, fashion with the handle.” The structured, briefcase-like body refers to his mother and her generation. He also recalled making a briefcase-like object from neoprene and backpack straps as a child, an early personal connection to the shape. When did the Ana bag come out, and how did it become popular?
Vogue dates the Ana’s launch to 2021. Lopez had held onto the idea for about two years while Luar built visibility, according to the magazine’s 2023 profile. The timing coincided with the label’s return to New York Fashion Week; British Vogue’s 2021 interview also noted Dua Lipa and Troye Sivan carrying the bag. Vogue reported in 2023 that the Ana accounted for over half of Luar’s sales at that time. The same profile reported 140 per cent sales growth from SS22 to SS23. These are figures reported by Vogue for that period, not current results or audited sales data; the article also said Lopez could not break out sales figures. Nordstrom’s Rickie De Sole called it “an undisputed cult accessory” that set Luar apart through its accessible price point and distinctive design. Prices depend on the size, material and listing date. LUAR’s official product page reviewed in 2026 listed the Large Ana in Smooth Brown Leather for $395. That is a specific current-listing example, not a permanent price for every Ana. The Guardian discussed a $325 regular-size retail price in April 2023; that historical price refers to a different date and potentially a different version, so it should not be treated as directly equivalent. There is a practical tension at the heart of the design’s appeal: it makes a personal family story visible in a recognizable shape, while Lopez has also described wanting a bag he could afford when he was starting out. As he told The Guardian, “I wanted to make a bag that I could afford when I was coming up.” A past price or one present listing cannot establish affordability for every shopper, but the intention helps explain why price has been part of the Ana’s public story.
