Tipping in Thailand is generally optional, not compulsory. Check the bill for a service charge first, then decide whether a modest tip suits the service and setting. The amounts below are recommendations from an independent travel guide published on 5 November 2025—not official rates, measured averages, or amounts every worker expects.
How much to tip in Thailand
There is no single percentage that fits every situation. Routine transactions and local eateries are different from personal services such as massage or a guided tour. These suggestions come from the Visit-Thailand guide; treat them as optional examples, since customs vary by venue.

Where tipping is not customary
The guide identifies convenience stores, supermarkets, food courts, and public transport as settings where tipping is not done and an attempted tip may cause confusion. A smile, patience, and thanks are appropriate instead.
Check whether a service charge is already included
A service charge printed on a hotel or restaurant bill is a charge collected by the business. It is not necessarily the same as a separate tip handed directly to a worker. For restaurants, the 2025 guide says an additional tip is generally unnecessary when a service charge is included, unless the service was exceptional.

The Thai Revenue Department’s opinion 0702/7809, dated 3 September 2013 and updated on its page on 22 May 2020, concerns the tax treatment of service charges in the hotel and restaurant cases it examined. It described charges as mostly 10% of room or food charges in those cases and treated them as part of the business’s service price for tax purposes; amounts employees received were treated as employment-related benefits paid by the employer. That historical tax opinion does not establish the current practice of every venue or mean diners must add a tip.
How to give a tip politely
- Use Thai baht and hand the money directly to the person you are tipping.
- Thank them with a smile and keep the gesture discreet rather than making a display.
- The guide describes using both hands as a respectful gesture.
- For a massage, give the tip to the therapist rather than leaving money on a bed or table, unless that spa has a different custom.
What the official tourism FAQ establishes
The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Money Issue FAQs includes the question “Do I have to tip in Thailand? How much to tip?” The answer was not visible in the page text checked on 8 October 2026, so it cannot be used to establish an official recommended amount. The baht figures in this article are independent guide suggestions, not government guidance.
