Tipping in Peru: Who, When, and How Much

Tipping in Peru is optional. Check restaurant bills for service charges, treat 10%–15% as guidance rather than a rule, and ask tour operators whether gratuities are included.

Tipping in Peru is discretionary, not a fixed nationwide requirement. Peru’s official tourism portal says there is no preset amount and that about 10% of a restaurant check is generally adequate; a 2025 UN Tourism event note suggests 10%–15% for satisfactory service. Before adding anything, check whether a service charge is already included and whether a tour package covers gratuities.

Restaurant tips: check the bill before choosing an amount

Peru Travel, the country’s official tourism portal, says there is “no pre-established amount” for gratuities and that the decision depends on satisfaction with the service. Its general reference is about 10% of the check. A UN Tourism information note prepared for its 2025 Regional Commission for the Americas meeting gives a higher range—around 10%–15% of the bill when service is satisfactory. These are recommendations, not a settled mandatory rate for every restaurant.

Look closely at the bill before adding a tip. A Peruvian government visitor-information page for Lima says service charges are included in most restaurants and hotels, and that rounding up an invoice by up to 10% is appreciated. The page does not establish that a charge is included at every venue, or that it is paid directly to the individual server. If a service charge appears, avoid automatically adding another full percentage; decide whether any additional amount feels warranted for the service.

Who to tip in Peru, and when

Service Practical approach
Restaurants Check for a service charge, then use the service and venue to decide whether to leave anything. Official guidance ranges from about 10% as generally adequate to 10%–15% when satisfied; neither is a universal requirement.
Hotels A discretionary tip may be appropriate for direct help such as carrying luggage or housekeeping. Follow any guidance posted by the hotel; no national standard amount is established.
Tour guides and drivers Ask the operator whether gratuities are included in the price and what it recommends for the guide or driver. Tips are discretionary and can reflect the service received.
Multi-day treks Before departure, ask how the company handles tips for guides, porters, and cooks, and whether the group is expected to pool contributions. Practices can differ by operator and trek.
Taxis A tip is generally not customary according to practical travel guidance. Rounding up an app fare is optional. Agreeing on a fare and choosing a legitimate taxi are separate matters.
Shops and unsolicited help Shopping does not generally call for a tip. You need not pay for help you did not request; this is practical visitor advice, not a statement of law.

UN Tourism describes tipping as common in restaurants, hotels, and other tourism services, but that does not mean every worker expects a gratuity. For taxis, Peru Travel separately advises visitors to avoid unofficial or unmarked taxis, especially at night.

Tour and trek gratuities: confirm the policy before you go

Tour prices do not necessarily handle tips the same way. Before booking or starting a trip, ask the operator whether gratuities are included, which staff they cover, and whether the company has a suggested process for distributing tips. On a multi-day trek, clarify this for guides, porters, and cooks rather than assuming one pooled amount or custom applies everywhere.

An independent travel guide recommends asking trek operators in advance because staff roles may have distinct customs. That is useful planning advice, not a universal Peru-wide tipping rule. The International Society for Computational Biology’s LATAM 2026 conference FAQ also gives examples for its event context—including US-dollar suggestions for hotel staff and private or small-group guides—but those figures are event-specific and should not be treated as national standards.

Cash, currency, and small tips

Peru’s currency is the sol (PEN; S/). A UN Tourism note lists circulating coins of 10, 20, and 50 céntimos and 1, 2, and 5 soles. Carrying some small-denomination soles can make a discretionary tip easier: an independent travel guide notes that some venues may not add a tip to a card slip and smaller businesses may have difficulty changing large notes. Cash is a convenience, not a requirement.
