Charlie is a financial technology company offering banking services for adults 62 and older, with features aimed at helping people manage limited resources in retirement. Its launch plans included early access to Social Security payments and future retirement-income ideas. But its current terms need checking: Charlie’s pages show an undated notice that customer service will cease by June 30, and the rate promoted on its site is dated March 1, 2025.

What is Charlie?

Charlie is a fintech company focused on people age 62 and older. It is not itself a bank: Charlie’s app page identifies Sutton Bank as the provider of banking services. The distinction matters because the app is the customer-facing service, while the named bank provides the banking services. Review Charlie’s current account disclosures for the applicable account and deposit terms before relying on them. Charlie app page

Charlie launched on May 9, 2023, and announced $7.5 million in funding, according to TechCrunch’s launch report. The company’s stated purpose was to help retirees and people nearing retirement make the most of limited resources, as their financial focus shifts from saving assets to drawing them down.

What does Charlie say its account offers?

Early Social Security deposits

Charlie’s current promotional page advertises Social Security direct deposits arriving 3–5 days early. That is a company claim, not a guarantee that every customer or payment will arrive early; check current eligibility and account terms. Charlie promotional page

The timing has changed from the way the launch story described the plan. TechCrunch reported in 2023 that Charlie would let customers access Social Security benefits up to four weeks early. That historical description is not the same as the 3–5-day claim on Charlie’s current promotional page.

Fees, minimums and advertised APY

Charlie’s promotional page advertises no monthly fees and no minimums. It also displays a 3% APY, but the page dates that rate to March 1, 2025 and says it may change. It should not be treated as a verified October 2026 rate. Check the current account disclosures for the rate, eligibility requirements and any fees that apply.

FraudShield controls

Charlie’s FraudShield page describes controls intended to give account holders more visibility and control over transactions. The listed options include:

  • Putting a card into sleep mode and setting online or daily spending limits.
  • Controlling international transactions, receiving transaction texts and seeing clearer transaction descriptions.
  • Adding a trusted person as a “Fraud Alerts Co-Pilot.”
  • Using SpeedBump pauses for certain actions, such as adding a payee, scheduling a large transaction or logging in from a new device.

These are descriptions from Charlie, not independent evidence that fraud is prevented or losses reduced. The page marks Smart Alerts and Smart Suggestions as “Coming soon,” so they should not be counted as available features. Charlie FraudShield page

Which retirement features were plans, not confirmed products?

TechCrunch’s 2023 report described several ideas Charlie wanted to develop, including an age- and risk-tolerance-based “deaccumulation ETF,” a “home pension” that could use some home equity to supplement Social Security, and tools to detect fraud. The report quoted CEO Kevin Nazemi describing the home-pension concept as one in which a customer might choose to turn a portion of home equity into income while leaving most of it to a legacy.

Those were future concepts in the launch coverage. Charlie’s current pages reviewed for this article do not verify that the ETF or home-equity product launched, so they should not be treated as services customers can currently use.

Can you sign up for Charlie now?

Charlie’s official app and promotional pages still describe account features, but its app, promotional and legal pages also display the notice “Customer service will cease by 6/30.” The notice gives no year and does not explain which services would end. The information available on those pages therefore does not establish whether new customers can sign up or what the notice means for existing accounts. Check directly with Charlie before opening or relying on an account. App page, promotional page and legal page
