Steven Spielberg ranks as Hollywood’s richest film director in the most comparable published list available here: a Forbes-derived snapshot dated March 1, 2026, estimates his net worth at $7.1 billion. George Lucas is second at $5.2 billion. These are publisher estimates, not audited personal balance sheets, and they should not be confused with box-office totals or a director’s career earnings.

Richest film directors, ranked by estimated net worth

The figures below use one shared snapshot: estimates attributed to Forbes and summarized by Visual Capitalist, dated March 1, 2026. The ranking is limited to the five directors in that comparison; it is not a complete list of every wealthy filmmaker.

Rank Director Estimated net worth
1 Steven Spielberg $7.1 billion
2 George Lucas $5.2 billion
3 Peter Jackson $1.9 billion
4 Tyler Perry $1.4 billion
5 James Cameron $1.1 billion

Visual Capitalist’s ranking attributes its figures to Forbes via Hypebeast. Net-worth estimates are attempts to value assets minus liabilities; private investments, ownership stakes and valuation assumptions make them uncertain.

Why newer estimates do not automatically change the ranking

Forbes’s individual Steven Spielberg profile displayed an estimate of $7.9 billion as of October 2, 2026, reflecting changes since 5 p.m. ET on the prior trading day; the profile was marked last updated September 15, 2026. That is a later estimate for Spielberg alone, not a new same-date comparison of all five directors, so it should not be combined with the March figures to imply a refreshed ranking.

Publishers can also disagree about the same person. Celebrity Net Worth estimated George Lucas’s net worth at $7 billion on a page updated August 28, 2026, compared with Forbes’s March estimate of $5.2 billion. Celebrity Net Worth says it draws on public sources and may use private tips or feedback when available. Neither figure is an audited statement, and the estimates should not be averaged as if they were precise measurements.

What contributes to a director’s wealth?

Directing fees are only one possible source of wealth. Ownership, intellectual-property rights, recurring licensing or participation income, and other business interests can contribute substantially. But different financial measures answer different questions:

  • Estimated net worth is a publisher’s estimate of assets minus liabilities at a particular time.
  • Film gross is ticket revenue attributed to films, not money the director personally receives.
  • Career earnings or salary describes income over time; it does not show how much remains after taxes, expenses, investments or spending.
  • Company-sale value is the value of a transaction, not automatically the seller’s current net worth.

Steven Spielberg

Forbes identifies movies as Spielberg’s source of wealth and describes DreamWorks cofounding and ticket-related income from Universal Orlando as parts of his financial story. Forbes also reports that his films have grossed more than $10 billion worldwide. That box-office figure describes his filmography, not his personal fortune.

George Lucas

Lucas’s wealth is associated with ownership and retained Star Wars sequel and merchandising rights, as well as the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 for approximately $4.1 billion in cash and stock, according to Celebrity Net Worth. The transaction helps explain the context behind his wealth; it is not a measure of his current net worth.

How to read this ranking

Use the March 2026 list when you want a like-for-like comparison across the five directors: the estimates share a publisher attribution and snapshot date. Treat later individual profile figures as updates for that person only unless a source provides a complete ranking on the same date. The available evidence supports the five-person comparison above, not a definitive ranking of every Hollywood director.
