The Richest Hedge Fund Managers in the World: What the Available Rankings Show

Forbes’ dated estimates put Ken Griffin ahead of David Tepper, Ray Dalio and Seth Klarman among the figures available. Institutional Investor’s 2026 Rich List ranks estimated 2025 earnings, not net worth.

Ken Griffin is the wealthiest of the hedge fund managers with dated Forbes net-worth estimates in the available figures: Forbes put his real-time net worth at $60.6 billion on September 10, 2026. David Tepper followed at $28.5 billion on September 11, 2026, and Ray Dalio at $18.9 billion on September 10, 2026. These are estimates from different snapshot dates, not audited balance sheets or a complete global ranking. A separate 2026 ranking by Institutional Investor measures estimated 2025 earnings—not net worth—and has Chris Hohn at the top.

Estimated personal net worth: the available dated figures

The figures below are Forbes real-time net-worth estimates on the dates shown. They offer a limited comparison, not a comprehensive ranking of every hedge fund manager worldwide. Values can change, and estimates taken on different dates are not perfectly synchronized.

Order among these figures Manager Estimated personal net worth As of
1 Ken Griffin $60.6 billion September 10, 2026
2 David Tepper $28.5 billion September 11, 2026
3 Ray Dalio $18.9 billion September 10, 2026
4 Seth Klarman $1.5 billion October 7, 2026

Sources: Forbes’ Ken Griffin profile, Forbes’ David Tepper profile, Forbes’ Ray Dalio profile, and Forbes’ Seth Klarman profile. The order applies only to these four published estimates; it should not be read as a definitive world ranking.

Ken Griffin

Forbes estimated Griffin’s real-time net worth at $60.6 billion on September 10, 2026. Its earlier Forbes 400 estimate was $50.4 billion as of September 9, 2025. Those are estimates at different dates, not a like-for-like measure of a precise annual change.

David Tepper

Forbes put Tepper’s real-time net worth at $28.5 billion on September 11, 2026, and his Forbes 400 estimate at $23.7 billion on September 9, 2025. Separately, Institutional Investor estimated he earned $3.3 billion during 2025 and ranked him fourth on its 2026 Rich List; that annual earnings figure is not an estimate of his total wealth.

Ray Dalio

Forbes estimated Dalio’s real-time net worth at $18.9 billion on September 10, 2026, compared with a Forbes 400 estimate of $15.4 billion on September 9, 2025. Forbes says Dalio sold his full stake in Bridgewater by 2025, an important distinction when interpreting his present-day wealth versus his former firm relationship.

Seth Klarman

Forbes estimated Klarman’s real-time net worth at $1.5 billion on October 7, 2026, describing his source of wealth as investments and identifying him as Baupost Group’s CEO and president.

A separate ranking: hedge fund managers’ estimated 2025 earnings

Institutional Investor’s 2026 Rich List ranks estimated earnings during 2025. Its method counts a manager’s gains on capital invested in their funds plus their share of fees; gains on personal capital still count when a fund is below its high-water mark. It is therefore an annual earnings ranking, not a net-worth leaderboard.

2026 Rich List rank Manager Estimated 2025 earnings
1 Chris Hohn $4.9 billion
2 Steven Cohen $4.0 billion
3 Israel (Izzy) Englander $3.5 billion
4 David Tepper $3.3 billion

What the earnings list says—and does not say

Institutional Investor reported that its top 25 managers earned $36.65 billion collectively in 2025, its highest aggregate across the quarter-century it had published the ranking. Ten managers earned more than $1 billion, and the qualification threshold was $470 million. These are ranking statistics for 2025 earnings, not measures of managers’ accumulated fortunes.

The publication also reported that nine of the top earners’ funds lagged the S&P 500 in 2025, while noting that some managers use benchmarks other than the S&P 500. A large earnings estimate alone does not establish benchmark outperformance.

Why firm assets under management are not personal wealth

Assets under management (AUM) describe money managed by a firm for its investors and other clients; they do not belong outright to the manager. For context, Institutional Investor said TCI managed $77 billion at the time described in its 2026 article, while reporting that Hohn earned an estimated $4.9 billion in 2025. Neither figure can be substituted for Hohn’s personal net worth: one is firm AUM, the other an annual earnings estimate.

When comparing wealth claims, check that the number is a personal net-worth estimate, identify its publisher and valuation date, and keep annual earnings and firm AUM in separate categories. Firm ownership also matters: Forbes says Dalio had sold his full Bridgewater stake by 2025, so past association with a firm should not be assumed to mean current ownership.

How to read a “richest managers” list

  • Look for the metric. “Net worth” means an estimate of accumulated personal wealth; “earnings” refers to income or gains over a stated period.
  • Check the date or year. A real-time estimate is a snapshot; a 2025 earnings figure describes a year’s results and was ranked in 2026.
  • Keep the source attached. Forbes’ personal estimates and Institutional Investor’s earnings methodology answer different questions.
  • Do not treat an estimate as an audited balance sheet. The cited numbers are publishers’ estimates, not independently audited statements of personal assets and liabilities.
  • Do not infer a complete global order. The dated figures available here do not establish a same-date, same-method ranking covering every manager worldwide.
