The most directly attributable estimate is about $5 billion, but it is a 2012 hypothetical—not a current quote or a verified 2026-dollar cost. Architect Jean-Pierre Houdin’s scenario, reported by Live Science in 2012, envisaged modern equipment and a five-year build of the Great Pyramid of Khufu. It does not provide an itemized estimate for every cost a real project would face.
What the $5 billion estimate assumes
Houdin’s scenario used stone-carrying vehicles, cranes and helicopters, with roughly 1,500 to 2,000 workers building the Great Pyramid in about five years. The report says the comparison drew on manpower and the cost of constructing Hoover Dam during the Great Depression. It is an order-of-magnitude comparison, not a contractor bid or formal quantity survey; the article does not establish that its figure has been updated for inflation.
The estimate concerns the Great Pyramid of Khufu, not all three major pyramids at Giza. The cited report does not give a project budget broken down by materials, labor, equipment or other costs.
What would have to be built—and moved
Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities gives the Great Pyramid’s original height as 146.5 meters and estimates that it took 10 to 20 years to build. Its core was local limestone, while the original high-quality limestone casing came from Tura and was transported by boat. Those details make stone sourcing and logistics central to any modern replica’s cost, rather than incidental expenses. See the Ministry’s Great Pyramid monument page.

The Smithsonian reports that pyramid blocks average more than two tons, with some weighing as much as fifteen tons. Moving and placing such stone at scale would require a substantial transport and lifting plan. The $5 billion scenario names modern vehicles, cranes and helicopters, but does not provide a complete equipment or materials schedule. See the Smithsonian’s overview of pyramid construction.
Why a real modern project could have a different price
“Build the pyramid” can mean different scopes. A faithful stone reconstruction with casing is not the same project as a simplified structure, and the location would affect access to quarries, transport routes, land and infrastructure. A current budget would also need to define the construction method, equipment and workforce, schedule, safety and permitting requirements, and whether site preparation and surrounding infrastructure are included.

The 2012 scenario does not itemize these categories or establish how it treats them. No contemporary bill of quantities, formal bid for an exact replica or defensible current-dollar total is established by the cited material. Giving a newly calculated price range would therefore imply more precision than the evidence supports.
What is known—and not settled—about the ancient build
The Ministry’s monument page says there is no certain information about precisely how the Great Pyramid was built. Published studies continue to examine possible construction mechanisms: a PalArch paper models levering and coordinates activities such as quarrying and hauling, while a 2026 npj Heritage Science study presents a computational framework for evaluating an edge-integrated, multi-ramp model. These are proposals and analytical approaches, not a universally confirmed blueprint.

That uncertainty matters to cost: a modern estimate based on a particular ramp or lifting system would inherit that system’s assumptions. Houdin’s own construction ideas should not be treated as settled archaeological fact simply because they underpin a cost scenario.

The Live Science report describes an ancient build using 4,000 workers over 20 years. The Smithsonian, discussing Herodotus’ account, reports a much larger figure of 100,000 workers working three months a year for 20 years, and notes that modern labor estimates tend to be smaller. These are different attributed accounts, not numbers that can be averaged into a definitive ancient workforce. Neither establishes the staffing plan or price of a modern replica.
