NerdWallet’s list showed a maximum of 5.00% APY as of October 5, while Bankrate’s examples ranged from 3.80% to 4.25% APY as of October 7 and Finder listed one account at 4.10% APY on October 2. What savings account rates are shown in October 2026?
Comparison sites differ in which accounts they include, so their examples should not be combined into a definitive ranking. The following figures are secondary-source listings, not independently verified current offers. APYs may change, and the institution’s official rate disclosure and account agreement control.
| Source and date | Published example | Terms visible in the source |
|---|---|---|
| NerdWallet, APYs current as of October 5, 2026; other information current as of October 1, 2026 | List reaches 5.00% APY. Named accounts include Axos ONE Savings, Newtek Bank Personal High Yield Savings, and Peak Bank Envision High-Yield Savings. | For Peak Bank Envision High-Yield Savings, NerdWallet lists a 4.27% standard rate, $100 minimum opening deposit, and no monthly maintenance fee. Verify these details with the bank. |
| Bankrate, APYs as of October 7, 2026 | LevelUp Savings: 4.20%; Western Alliance Bank savings: 3.80%; Vio Bank savings: 4.01%; Barclays Select Savings: 4.25%. | These examples do not establish every account’s full eligibility, balance, fee, or access conditions; check the institution’s disclosures. |
| Finder, updated October 2, 2026 | Live Oak Bank through Raisin: 4.10% APY. | Finder’s visible listing shows $0 to open and a $0.01 minimum balance to earn APY. Confirm details with the institution. |
The cited pages do not establish that a 5.25% or 5.50% account is currently available to ordinary savers. A particular institution may advertise a limited or conditional offer, but do not rely on a headline percentage without a current official disclosure identifying the account, effective date, balance tier, and qualifying requirements.

Why the APY is not a guaranteed year-long rate
Annual percentage yield (APY) expresses interest as an annualized yield under stated assumptions; it is not necessarily a promise that the rate will remain unchanged for a year. For an account with no stated maturity, the Federal Reserve’s disclosure guidance describes a calculation based on 365 days and assumes the principal and interest stay on deposit with no other transactions. Variable-rate savings accounts can change their rates, so an APY is a dated snapshot.

Some accounts use balance tiers or conditions to determine the yield. Federal Reserve guidance says the disclosed APY or APY range must reflect the tier method the account uses. Read the rate sheet to see which balance earns which rate and whether the advertised figure depends on a qualifying activity.
See the Federal Reserve’s APY disclosure guidance for the calculation and disclosure framework. The FDIC’s national deposit rates and rate caps are benchmarks based on its stated methodology, not a ranking of the highest offers; check the release month before citing a particular statistic. How to compare accounts beyond the headline rate
Before choosing an account, compare the terms that determine whether the APY is attainable and useful for your savings goal:
- Rate and date: Record the APY and when it was checked. Determine whether it is variable, promotional, or tied to a specific balance or activity.
- Opening and earning minimums: These can be different. Check both the deposit needed to open the account and any minimum balance required to earn the stated APY.
- Balance tiers and caps: Find out whether the top rate applies to your entire balance, only a portion, or only within a specified range.
- Fees: Review monthly maintenance fees and other charges that could offset interest. Check whether a fee waiver has conditions.
- Eligibility and qualifying activity: Confirm any requirements attached to the advertised rate before counting on it.
- Access to funds: Check how deposits and withdrawals work, including transfer methods and any account restrictions that matter for emergency savings or a near-term goal.
- Deposit insurance and institution: Identify the legally named institution holding the deposit and verify its insurance status and coverage details using official information before relying on coverage.
Comparison sites can help identify candidates, but their summaries may not include every condition. Use the account’s official rate disclosure and agreement to resolve differences and confirm the terms that apply to your balance.
How to estimate what a rate difference means
For a rough comparison, a 0.25 percentage-point APY difference on $10,000 is about $25 over a year before taxes, assuming the rates remain in place and the balance stays unchanged. Actual interest depends on the account’s compounding and crediting terms, any rate changes, fees, deposits, and withdrawals. Because APYs are annualized and rates may vary, this estimate is not a promise of earnings.
