The best way to get more from a career fair is to arrive with a short list of employers, a concise introduction, and questions tailored to each one. Use the event to learn about roles and make useful contacts—not as a guarantee of a job offer. A clear plan helps whether you attend in person or online.

Before the career fair: choose where to focus

Prioritize employers that fit

Review the attendee list and select employers whose work, roles, internships, or programs match your interests and qualifications. Decide which tables or sessions to visit first; there may not be time to meet everyone. Leave room for an exploratory conversation with an organization you do not know well, but do not mistake a familiar name for a good fit. UT Austin CNS Career Services and UIC Career Services recommend reviewing employers and planning your visits.

Research roles and prepare questions

Check employers’ official career pages and other company information for current roles, internships, and hiring programs. Write two or three questions for each employer based on what you find. Ask about the work, expectations for a role, hiring pathways, or what a strong candidate should demonstrate. Avoid spending your limited conversation time asking something the employer’s website already answers prominently. UC Davis Career Center offers guidance on researching an employer and preparing a pitch.

Update your resume and practice an introduction

Tailor your resume to the kinds of roles you want, and ask a career adviser or another qualified reviewer for feedback if available. For an in-person fair, bring copies in case recruiters request one. Prepare a natural introduction that covers who you are, relevant experience or skills, the opportunity you seek, and why that employer interests you. MIT and UIC suggest a 30–60 second pitch; treat that as a guide to being concise, not a script you must recite word for word. MIT Career Advising & Professional Development and UIC Career Services provide pitch guidance.

Pack or set up for your format

For an in-person event, resume copies, a pen, and a notepad are useful. A portfolio or padfolio can keep those materials and your employer notes together, but it is optional; no particular brand or feature is necessary. For a virtual fair, check the platform and schedule beforehand, follow the event’s access instructions, and prepare a quiet place with the device and connection you plan to use. Know how to join sessions and use chat or meeting features. UIUC Career Center lists materials for an in-person fair, while Harvard FAS Mignone Center for Career Success covers virtual participation.

At the fair: make the conversation count

Open clearly, then adapt

Greet the recruiter, say your name, and respond to their prompts. If they ask you to introduce yourself, give the prepared version and connect your experience to the employer or role. Then listen and respond to what the recruiter says. A fair conversation works better as a brief professional exchange than as a memorized monologue.

Ask useful questions and take notes

Use your prepared questions as a starting point, adapting them to the discussion. For example, you might ask whether the employer hires students for summer jobs or co-op work terms, a question suggested by UVic Career Services. Before moving on, note the recruiter’s name and role, a specific point you discussed, and any contact details or next steps. You can ask for a business card, email address, or another appropriate way to stay in touch if one is offered.

Adjust your approach for a virtual session

Join scheduled sessions on time. Use attentive body language, look toward the camera when appropriate, and allow the other person to finish before you speak. Keep your notes and questions handy, and use the event’s chat or meeting tools as directed. These are practical ways to participate in a timed online conversation; follow any additional instructions set by the event organizers.

After the fair: follow through

Apply through the employer’s process

If a relevant opening interests you, submit an application as instructed. A conversation at a fair does not replace a formal application when the employer requires one. Track applications, promised next steps, and contacts so you know what remains to be done.

Send a personalized follow-up

For recruiters you want to continue speaking with, send a concise thank-you or follow-up message that identifies the fair, recalls a specific part of your conversation, and states a relevant next step or question. UT Austin CNS Career Services and UAF Career Services recommend following up within 24–48 hours. That is their advice, not a measured universal deadline; use any timing or process the employer gave you. UT Austin CNS Career Services and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Career Services explain follow-up practices.

Set a realistic goal for the event

A useful result may be learning which roles fit, meeting a contact, getting an invitation to apply or interview, or becoming more comfortable talking with employers. Penn and MIT career-service guidance caution against treating an immediate offer as the expected result. The point is to make informed connections and follow through on opportunities that fit—not to count the fair as a job offer. University of Pennsylvania Career Services and MIT Career Advising & Professional Development discuss expectations and fair etiquette.
