Tipping is generally not expected in restaurants, cafés, bars, taxis or hotels; paying the stated price is normal. A tip for exceptional service is optional, not a customary percentage.
Are you expected to tip in Iceland?
No. Visitor guidance from Visit Reykjavík and Visit Reykjanes describes tipping as unnecessary. You can pay the amount shown without worrying that you have breached a local custom. Current guidance does not establish a standard percentage or amount.
Should you tip by service?
| Setting | Is a tip expected? | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurants and cafés | No | Pay the bill. A small optional tip for exceptional service is a personal choice, not a required percentage. Tours of Iceland covers restaurant and café etiquette. |
| Bars | No | No tip is expected when ordering drinks at a counter. Table service is described as rare in the Tours of Iceland guide. |
| Taxis | No | Pay the fare. Taxis may use a meter or agree the fare in advance; official guidance requires fare and pricing information to be accessible. That is a fare-transparency rule, not a tipping rule. See Ísland.is taxi rules. |
| Hotels | No | You do not need to tip housekeeping or the front desk. You may offer a voluntary thank-you for exceptional help, such as carrying heavy bags. |
| Tour guides and drivers | No | A tip for exceptional service is optional. Visit Reykjavík says cash in any currency is appreciated in that circumstance, but does not name an amount. |
What if a card terminal asks for a tip?
Selecting no tip is consistent with local visitor guidance; a terminal prompt does not mean a gratuity is customary or required. The available guidance does not establish how often prompts appear or what any particular venue expects.
Should you carry cash for tips?
Iceland is largely cashless, and Visit Reykjavík says cards are accepted almost everywhere. You do not need cash to cover routine tips. Foreign currencies are rarely accepted for ordinary purchases, so do not count on foreign cash as a practical way to pay for everyday expenses. If you choose to thank a guide or server for exceptional service, cash is an option, but no amount is prescribed.

Are service charges or taxes the reason tipping is unnecessary?
Some tourism guidance describes service or tax costs as included in prices, but that should not be turned into a universal legal claim that every bill must include a service charge. Iceland Revenue and Customs lists taxi services and public transport as VAT-exempt, while hotel and guest-room rentals are subject to 11% VAT; these tax categories do not establish tipping customs or a universal service-charge rule. See its guidance on VAT on tourism and VAT rates. The useful distinction for travelers is simple: the stated price is ordinarily what you pay, and an extra tip is not expected.
