TikTok’s Seattle Expansion Plan Puts Amazon’s Home Turf in Focus

TikTok’s reported Seattle-area hiring and office plans put its e-commerce push near Amazon’s home base, but the available figures do not show that TikTok Shop has caught up.

TikTok confirmed plans to expand its U.S. e-commerce operation in the Seattle area, according to The Information. At the time of that report, the company planned to base new U.S. e-commerce hires in Seattle, encourage some existing employees to relocate there and seek additional office space. The move put TikTok Shop closer to the talent pool in Amazon’s home region—but did not show that TikTok had matched Amazon’s marketplace or delivery scale.

What TikTok planned for Seattle

The reported expansion was an effort to build TikTok’s e-commerce team in the Seattle area. The Information said new U.S. e-commerce hires would be required to work there, some current employees were encouraged to relocate, and TikTok was looking for more office space. The outlet reported that TikTok confirmed the expansion. These were plans reported at the time, not confirmation that the same hiring or office arrangements remain in place today.

Seattle’s relevance is partly about labor. The Information described the area as a source of e-commerce and logistics expertise, including people with experience at Amazon. It reported, based on LinkedIn data, that around 400 former Amazon employees had joined TikTok in the preceding year. That count covered employees across TikTok divisions, not just e-commerce, and was not an official TikTok hiring disclosure. Brittain Ladd, a Seattle-based supply-chain consultant quoted by The Information, said the move was “a great way for them to have a presence and hire people from Amazon.”

Why Amazon is central to the story

Amazon’s long-standing Seattle presence makes the location strategically meaningful: TikTok would be recruiting in a region associated with the company it hopes to challenge in online shopping. Amazon said in 2018 that it had more than 45,000 employees in the Seattle area and over 8,000 positions open at that time. Those historical figures help explain the size of Amazon’s local footprint then; they are not current workforce numbers or a like-for-like measure of TikTok’s staffing.

The reporting supports a competitive ambition and a talent strategy, not a conclusion that TikTok Shop had caught up with Amazon. The available figures do not establish a comparable current market share, fulfillment network, delivery speed, customer base or unit economics for the two companies.

How TikTok Shop’s shopping model differs

TikTok describes its approach as “discovery e-commerce”: shoppers encounter products through content and creators, rather than necessarily starting with a search for a specific item. In its June 2025 company newsroom post, TikTok wrote, “We call this discovery e-commerce.” The company said TikTok Shop launched in the United States in September 2023.

That content-led route to a purchase is the clearest distinction established here. It does not, by itself, establish that TikTok offers Amazon’s breadth of marketplace services or logistics capabilities. The Seattle hiring plan was consistent with investing in the people and operations needed to grow Shop, but the reports do not quantify what specific capabilities the new hires would build.

What the reported growth figures do—and do not—show

The figures available come from different sources and reporting periods, so they should not be read as one current scorecard:

Figure What it measures and how to read it
More than 70 million products across over 750 categories TikTok’s June 2025 description of the Shop assortment accumulated over the prior year; a company-reported figure, not an independently audited count. TikTok Newsroom
120% year-over-year U.S. sales increase TikTok’s stated growth for a comparable period in 2025, not an independently verified sales figure. TikTok Newsroom
Around $5 million to $6 million in daily U.S. customer orders, versus $3 million to $4 million a day in August The Information’s estimate, attributed to three people with knowledge of the matter. Its search extract does not give an unambiguous publication date, so “recent weeks” and “August” refer to the outlet’s reporting frame and should not be treated as current order volume. The Information
$200 billion in customer orders by 2028 An internal TikTok Shop ambition reported by The Information, not a public company forecast or a realized result. The Information

The numbers indicate that TikTok Shop was being built as a substantial commerce business, but they are not directly interchangeable. TikTok’s sales growth and assortment figures are company statements; the order-volume estimates and 2028 ambition were reported by The Information using sources outside a public company disclosure. None provides a current, comparable measure of TikTok Shop versus Amazon.

What shoppers and sellers can take from the expansion

For shoppers, the strategic bet is that entertaining or useful content can prompt product discovery and purchases inside TikTok. The Seattle expansion is a corporate staffing development, not a guarantee of better prices, broader selection, faster delivery or improved service for any particular order.

For sellers and creators, a larger e-commerce operation may signal TikTok’s intent to keep investing in Shop, but the cited reports do not establish specific changes to seller terms, fees, eligibility, fulfillment options or creator compensation. Those practical details should be checked against current TikTok Shop policies rather than inferred from the hiring plan.

How to interpret the Amazon comparison

  • Shopping experience: TikTok emphasizes product discovery through content and creators; the sources do not compare end-to-end marketplace features.
  • Seattle footprint: TikTok’s reported hiring and office plans target a region with a deep e-commerce labor pool. Amazon’s cited local employee and job-opening figures are from 2018.
  • Growth evidence: TikTok supplied dated sales and assortment figures in 2025; The Information reported order estimates and an internal target. These measures have different sources and definitions.
  • Competitive position: The reporting demonstrates an effort to grow TikTok Shop, not proof that it has overtaken Amazon.
