KeySavvy is a Seattle startup that aims to make private-party used-car sales easier to complete online. Its service combines identity checks, seller-ownership verification, payment processing and title paperwork, and it says it acts as a licensed dealer in the transaction. That can help organize a complicated exchange, but it is not a vehicle inspection or an independently verified guarantee against fraud.
Why private-party car sales are difficult to coordinate
A private used-car sale asks two people who may not know each other to coordinate several high-stakes tasks at once: confirm identities, establish that the seller can transfer ownership, agree on payment, sign a bill of sale and complete title paperwork. Cash and checks can leave uncertainty about when funds are secure; title, lien or loan issues can complicate registration after the handoff.
KeySavvy’s pitch is to put those transaction steps into a single online workflow. CEO and co-founder Andrew Crowell described the goal as “replacing cash and checks with a safer, simpler way to transact vehicles private party,” in a statement reported by GeekWire on November 21, 2024. That is the company’s ambition, not evidence that the service has independently demonstrated a particular reduction in fraud.
How KeySavvy says a sale works
- The seller adds the vehicle. KeySavvy says it checks legal ownership using third-party identity technology, public records, information from the seller and DMV records.
- The buyer pays online. The service says it verifies the buyer’s identity and facilitates payment rather than leaving the parties to rely only on cash or a check.
- Both parties sign the bill of sale. KeySavvy says it prepares an e-signed bill of sale and provides title instructions and temporary permits.
- KeySavvy processes the sale as a dealer. The company says it transfers payment and processes the vehicle sale, while checking for loans and liens that could prevent the buyer from registering the car.
KeySavvy estimates general verification at 15–30 minutes during business hours. It says lender coordination or bank processing can take longer, so that estimate is not a promise that every transaction will finish within that window. Its stated eligibility requirements include a US-titled vehicle and a buyer with a US address for title delivery.

What KeySavvy charges
KeySavvy’s site, reviewed October 8, 2026, lists a $99 transaction fee for the buyer and a separate $99 transaction fee for the seller. The parties may split the fees or have one side pay both. If a seller needs a loan payoff, the site lists an additional $99 seller fee.
These are the company’s published fees, not a comparison of total costs across platforms. Check KeySavvy’s current terms before starting: transaction prices and eligibility rules can change.

What the service does not establish about the car
Payment, identity and title workflows address transaction logistics; they do not establish that a car is mechanically sound. KeySavvy says buyers can purchase additional vehicle-history reports directly from CARFAX or AutoCheck. A history report is not the same as an independent mechanical inspection, and the company’s materials do not claim that it replaces one.
Buyers still need to evaluate the vehicle’s condition and decide whether to arrange an inspection. Sellers should also confirm that the title and any lender payoff information are accurate and ready for the transaction.

How KeySavvy fits among digital private-sale services
Other services describe overlapping but not identical approaches. Caramel says its workflow can cover identity, financing, insurance, payment and document signatures, with an optional protection plan. PrivateAuto describes identity verification, in-app offers and chat, an electronic bill of sale, payment transfer and title-transfer guidance. These are each companies’ descriptions of their own offerings, not a head-to-head test or proof that their protections are equivalent.
For a useful comparison, look beyond the phrase “secure transaction.” Check whether the service verifies identity and ownership, handles title or lien issues, explains when funds move, prepares paperwork, publishes all fees, and supports your financing and location. Also identify what remains your responsibility—especially assessing the car itself.

What the startup’s funding and growth figures show
GeekWire reported that KeySavvy raised $4.25 million in November 2024. The story also reported 5× revenue growth over the preceding year and named Cars & Bids, AutoCheck by Experian and Hemmings as newly announced partners. The growth figure is a company figure reported in 2024; the story did not disclose the revenue base, so it does not establish a dollar revenue amount or describe current growth.
Those details indicate investor backing and commercial activity at the time of the report, but they do not independently verify payment safety, title-check accuracy or consumer outcomes. The sources available here do not provide an independent performance measure or quantify fraud avoided.

Who might consider using it
KeySavvy may be worth considering if both parties want a guided online process for payment and paperwork rather than arranging those pieces independently. Before committing, confirm that the vehicle and buyer meet its stated US title and address requirements, review the current fees, and ask how a particular lender payoff or title situation will be handled. A transaction platform can help organize a sale; it cannot make the buyer’s vehicle-condition decision for them.
