In a report published March 27, 2025, CNN Newsource said experts expected it to fetch more than $100 million at auction. That was an estimate—not a confirmed sale total—and the collection’s later auction results are not established here.
What is the Traveller Collection?
CNN Newsource described the collection as spanning ancient to modern coins from more than 100 territories. It reportedly includes pieces gathered by an unnamed collector and his wife during travels through the Americas and Europe in the 1930s. The report said the collector began buying gold coins after the Wall Street Crash of 1929.
The scale and variety help explain the reported valuation, but the $100 million figure was an expectation attributed to experts, not a published appraisal of every coin or a realized auction result. CNN’s account drew on the sale release; it was not a full auction catalog.
Why were the coins buried?
According to CNN Newsource’s account of the sale release, the collector and his wife documented their purchases. As Nazi rule cast a shadow over Europe, they reportedly packed the coins in cigar boxes, transferred them to aluminum boxes and buried them. The report said many remained underground for about five decades before the collector’s heirs recovered them and stored them in a bank vault.

The family asked that the hiding place and recovery details remain private, CNN reported. The account therefore gives a broad history, not a verifiable location-by-location chain of custody.
Two reported highlights show the collection’s range
| Coin | Period and issuer | Reported metal, weight or rarity | What is not established in the report |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100-ducat gold coin | Ferdinand III of Habsburg; minted in 1629 | 348.5 grams of fine gold. CNN described it as one of the largest denominations of European gold coins ever minted. | Condition, individual provenance documentation and a realized or estimated lot price are not stated. |
| Set of five Tomans | Late 18th and early 19th centuries, under Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar; minted in Tehran and Isfahan | CNN said five complete sets are known, including one held at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. | Metal, weight, condition, individual provenance documentation and a realized or estimated lot price are not stated. |
These examples illustrate different kinds of numismatic interest: an unusually large European gold denomination and a scarce group of Iranian coins. The report does not provide enough catalog detail to compare their condition or value directly, or to infer how much either would contribute to the collection’s total.

What does “could fetch $100 million” mean?
The figure was a forecast reported in March 2025. It should not be read as a guaranteed minimum, a final hammer price or the amount the heirs would receive after any fees or other costs. The available report does not establish whether the sales later met that expectation.
CNN reported that the planned sales would take place over three years and that the first sale was scheduled for May 20, 2025. Those dates describe the plan announced at the time, not verified current auction status. Buyers or researchers seeking lot-level details would need current sale records and catalogs; the news report alone cannot confirm completion or realized prices.

Why numismatists called it significant
Arturo Russo, director of Numismatica Ars Classica, said the collection’s range, quality, rarities and formation story would make the sales “a landmark in the history of numismatics.” David Guest, director of David Guest Numismatics and consultant to the collection, said cataloguing the British coins left him “pinching myself.” He added that many were of types not known to have been offered for sale in more than 80 years, and some were “completely unrecorded.”
Those comments convey specialists’ enthusiasm, but they are not substitutes for individual lot descriptions, condition reports or completed-sale data. Rarity, preservation, documented ownership history and buyer demand can all matter to a coin’s auction price; this report supplies only selected details about the collection.
