Dmitry Volkov is an entrepreneur who built an online social-discovery business and an academic philosopher whose work addresses consciousness and free will. Understanding both sides of his public profile—and separating the company’s stated ambitions from independent scrutiny of its dating platforms—gives a fuller picture of the person behind Social Discovery Group (SDG).
Who is Dmitry Volkov?
Volkov is associated with two distinct kinds of work: building internet businesses and studying philosophical questions about the mind, agency, and moral responsibility. The first made him known as an entrepreneur; the second is documented in academic records and published books. Neither role, by itself, establishes the real-world social impact of the company he helped build.
Moscow State University’s Philosophy Faculty identifies Dmitry Borisovich Volkov as a Doctor of Philosophical Sciences. Its account says he completed the university’s history faculty in 1998, pursued postgraduate work at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO), earned a candidate degree in philosophy in 2008, and defended a doctoral dissertation in 2017 on free will and moral responsibility in contemporary analytic philosophy. The faculty also identifies him as a co-founder of the Moscow Center for Consciousness Studies.
What is Social Discovery Group, and what does “social discovery” mean?
SDG presents its mission as addressing loneliness, isolation, and disconnection by making virtual intimacy normal. That is the company’s stated purpose, not an independently measured result. The company describes social discovery as technology that helps people meet, maintain relationships, and find communities.

In a 2016 first-person article, Volkov used the term more broadly. He described the field as including social media, dating, peer-to-peer services, and blockchain, and wrote that it was an area of online business with a consumer-to-consumer component. His article described SDVentures, the name he used for the international internet holding, as having more than 50 online services at that time. Those were Volkov’s dated descriptions, not current counts.
At SDG’s Social Life 3.0 event on September 15, 2022, the company said it included more than 40 brands used by 250 million people in 100 countries. Those are historical company figures, not independently verified current totals. In its July 2026 reporting, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) said SDG did not confirm current group-wide user or country counts.

How does Volkov describe his business and investing career?
Volkov’s business profile is rooted in operating technology companies. In a December 23, 2025 interview, he said, “I started as an operator, not as an investor. I built Social Discovery Group and spent many years scaling technology businesses.” The statement is his own account of his career.
In that interview, Volkov said SDV mainly invested through venture and private-equity funds, with some direct investments. He described a fund-of-funds approach as a way to reach managers who identify companies early. This is an attributed description of SDV’s approach, not audited portfolio data; it should not be treated as a complete account of SDG’s holdings or performance.

What has Dmitry Volkov written?
Moscow State University lists two of Volkov’s philosophy monographs:
- Boston Zombie: D. Dennett and His Theory of Consciousness, on philosopher Daniel Dennett’s theory of consciousness.
- Freedom of the Will: Illusion or Possibility, on the philosophical debate about free will.
These books reflect his academic work, rather than serving as guides to SDG, its products, or its business history.

What has been reported about safety on affiliated dating platforms?
SDG’s anti-scam page describes company policies and systems: it says new services undergo security reviews, partners must meet data-protection rules, contractors are screened, and AI-assisted monitoring flags suspicious communications for human review. These are the company’s claims about its safeguards. A policy description alone does not establish how well a system works in practice.
ICIJ’s July 2026 investigation examined interrelated dating brands and corporate entities, reviewed records and policies, and interviewed users and people connected to platform operations. It reported allegations involving misleading profiles, paid interaction, and third-party operators. These are investigative findings and reported allegations—not a court’s determination that every account or allegation is true.

ICIJ also reported SDG’s response: the company said it does not employ models or chat operators, prohibits profiles run by third parties, does not pay free users, and uses verification and fraud controls. The company’s denials and policy descriptions are relevant responses, but they are not independent verification of the platforms’ practices.
The investigation described a U.S. civil racketeering lawsuit alleging fake profiles. The case had been sent to arbitration and remained pending when ICIJ reported on it; the allegations were not established by a court in that account. ICIJ also reported SDG’s figure that it removed more than 30,000 accounts suspected of fraudulent activity in 2025. That was a company-reported number relayed by ICIJ, not an independently audited total.

ICIJ reported that Malta’s Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority was conducting a “detailed assessment” of SOL Networks, AmoLatina, and related activities to decide whether a formal investigation was warranted. An assessment of whether to open an investigation is not a formal finding of wrongdoing. The cited reporting does not establish a later final outcome.
How should readers weigh Volkov’s public profile?
The evidence supports a profile with two substantial strands: company-building around technology-mediated connection, and academic work in philosophy. SDG’s mission is an aspiration; its reach figures are dated company claims; and Volkov’s investment remarks are his own account of an approach, not audited performance information. Separately, ICIJ’s reporting raises serious questions about affiliated dating platforms while also documenting SDG’s denials and the limited procedural status of the legal and regulatory matters it described. Keeping those categories separate is essential to assessing both the business and the claims made about it.
