Why Jetsgo Failed: The Story of Canada’s Short-Lived Low-Cost Airline

Jetsgo began flying in 2002 and grew quickly, but by March 2005 competitive pressure, rising costs, delayed expansion and worsening cash flow had converged. The trustee’s account explains why the airline shut down.

Jetsgo shut down on March 11, 2005, after competitive and financial pressures converged: lower fares and higher fuel costs squeezed profitability, a planned public offering did not happen, and delays in expanding onto more profitable routes contributed to losses and weakening cash flow. The June 2005 trustee’s report describes several contributing factors, not one decisive cause.

How Jetsgo grew from a small start-up

Founded by Michel Leblanc, Jetsgo began flying on June 12, 2002, with three leased MD-83 aircraft. The trustee’s June 2005 account says the fleet later grew to fourteen leased MD-83s and seventeen owned Fokker F-100s, thirteen of which were used in operations. Jetsgo flew domestic routes as well as holiday destinations in the United States and Caribbean, with operations based in Montreal and service that included Toronto Pearson and Montreal-Trudeau.

Near the end of its operations, the trustee described Jetsgo as Canada’s third-largest airline, with about 10% of the domestic market and approximately 1,200 employees. These are historical estimates reported by RSM Richter Inc.; the trustee cautioned that the company books and records available to it had not been reviewed or audited. Its report also says it expressed no opinion on their validity, exactness or reliability. The figures are therefore best read as attributed estimates, not audited measurements.

Why did Jetsgo fail?

The trustee attributed Jetsgo’s deterioration to a chain of pressures that reinforced one another. Its report does not quantify the independent effect of each factor or rank them, so the evidence supports a combined explanation rather than a single-cause verdict.

Fares and competition weakened profitability

The report characterizes 2004 as a period of intense domestic competition, lower ticket prices and lower airline profitability. For a carrier seeking to expand, lower fares meant less revenue per passenger at a time when operating costs were also rising.

Fuel prices added cost pressure

Increased fuel prices compounded the weaker fare environment. The trustee lists fuel costs among the pressures on the airline but does not provide a separate estimate of their financial impact.

The planned IPO did not happen

Jetsgo planned a $100 million initial public offering in 2004 to help finance the acquisition of seventeen Fokker aircraft and anticipated growth. The offering did not occur, leaving the planned financing unavailable. The trustee does not establish that the missed IPO alone caused the shutdown.

Expansion onto more profitable routes was delayed

The trustee says delays in expanding onto more profitable routes contributed to significant losses and deteriorating operating cash flow during 2004 and 2005. That timing mattered: the airline was facing lower fares and higher fuel costs while its intended route expansion had not yet produced the expected improvement.

Cash flow and creditor pressure worsened

The report describes decreasing industry profits, negative working capital, depleting cash flow and significant arrears to large creditors. As operating losses accumulated and cash weakened, creditor pressure became part of the company’s immediate financial problem. The report presents these developments as connected pressures, not as independently measured causal shares.

What happened when Jetsgo stopped flying?

  1. March 11, 2005: Jetsgo ceased all operations and sought protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). The House of Commons discussed the sudden shutdown that day, with members raising concerns about workers and ticket holders. Statements in that debate document the immediate public response, not audited counts of affected people.
  2. May 13, 2005: According to the trustee, after limited options remained and no acceptable arrangement plan for major creditors had emerged, Jetsgo made an assignment in bankruptcy.
  3. May 14, 2005: Transport Canada’s announcement said the airline’s air operator certificate would be cancelled effective 12:01 a.m. The regulator explained: “Without an air operator certificate, the company cannot provide commercial air services.” The cancellation formalized that Jetsgo could no longer operate commercial flights; it was not the cause of the earlier financial collapse.

Jetsgo in the wider Canadian airline market

The Competition Bureau describes Canadian aviation as a market with a small number of large carriers and many entrants that did not endure. It identifies Jetsgo as an airline that entered in 2002 and exited in 2005. That context helps explain how its rise and departure fit a broader pattern of entry and exit, but it does not show that Jetsgo shared the same individual causes of failure as other airlines.
