The best site for posting a job depends on whom you need to reach. For a low-cost starting point, Indeed offers eligible U.S. employers up to three free direct job posts per month, each live for up to 30 days. LinkedIn is a reasonable starting point for salaried or specialized roles, Handshake for interns and new graduates, and ZipRecruiter for broader distribution. These are use-case recommendations, not guarantees: compare applicant quality and hires by source for your own roles and markets.
How to choose where to post a job
Start with the candidate audience, then weigh cost, visibility, workflow and whether you can measure results. A high application count is not necessarily a good outcome if few applicants meet the requirements or progress to a hire.
- Audience: Decide whether the role is general, local or hourly, professional or specialized, campus-oriented, public-sector, or part of a specific occupation.
- Cost: Check eligibility for free posts, posting limits, how sponsored listings are billed and whether the platform provides a firm quote. Paid visibility can use a budget without producing a hire.
- Visibility: Consider whether an organic listing may lose prominence, whether sponsorship changes placement, and whether distribution partners extend the listing’s reach.
- Workflow: Account for screening, candidate matching, resume search, applicant tracking and the time needed to monitor multiple sites.
- Measurement: Track qualified applicants, interviews and hires by source—not just views or total applications.

Best job-posting sites by hiring need
| Hiring need | Starting option | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Low-cost initial posting | Indeed | Eligible U.S. employers can post up to three jobs per month directly for free, each live for up to 30 days. Terms, quality standards and usage limits apply. |
| Salaried or specialized roles | A fit to test for professional audiences; confirm current posting costs and compare qualified applicants. | |
| Broader distribution | ZipRecruiter | Its matching and third-party distribution support a broad-distribution approach, but wider reach does not guarantee qualified applicants. |
| Applicant tracking and multi-board distribution | Workable | Workable says its recruiting software offers one-click posting to more than 200 job sites alongside applicant tracking. This is a vendor-published feature claim; software adds cost. |
| Internships and new graduates | Handshake | A starting point for campus and early-career recruiting; confirm fit with the schools and candidates you need to reach. |
The options and use cases above reflect Business News Daily’s 2026 comparison. Workable’s posting count is from Workable’s product page; ZipRecruiter’s distribution model is described in its SEC filing. Neither source establishes that a platform will outperform alternatives for a particular employer.

Indeed: free posts, sponsorship and limits
Indeed’s U.S. employer pricing page, last updated August 19, 2026, says employers can post up to three jobs per month directly for free, with each free post live for up to 30 days. Eligibility is subject to Indeed’s terms, quality standards and usage limits, and some jobs may require sponsorship. Free listings can lose visibility as newer jobs arrive. Indeed’s U.S. pricing guide
Sponsored-post charges depend on the account and market; Indeed says pricing may be based on clicks or started applications. The recommended budget varies with the job title, location, competition and hiring timeline, so a price quoted for one role should not be treated as a standard rate. Sponsorship can prioritize visibility, but it does not guarantee a hire. Indeed’s pricing guide and Indeed’s plan information
Indeed says directly posted Premium Sponsored Jobs are 90% more likely to report a hire than non-sponsored jobs, based on Indeed U.S. data; the overview page does not specify a date. This is a platform-reported association, not independent evidence that sponsorship causes a hire or will deliver the same result for every employer. Indeed’s employer overview
Public-sector hiring: use a distinct channel mix
In NEOGOV’s 2023 survey of public-sector HR leaders, 90% said they posted on GovernmentJobs.com, 73% on Indeed and 66% on LinkedIn. The survey also reported college job boards at 50%, career pages at 44% and state-based job boards at 34%. These figures describe surveyed public-sector HR leaders, not all U.S. employers, and indicate reported use—not which channel produced the most hires. NEOGOV’s 2023 report

Other channels to consider
Depending on the role and location, a state job bank or National Labor Exchange, USAJOBS, or a specialist board may be worth testing. Examples named in a 2026 commercial guide include Dice, Built In, Wellfound, FlexJobs and Snagajob. Treat that vendor-produced guide as a channel checklist rather than an authority on technical setup, legal duties or current rates. The 2026 channel guide
Google for Jobs is not described in that guide as a conventional employer posting dashboard; it relies on job-listing data. Do not assume it offers a direct posting flow equivalent to a job board. Confirm current primary documentation before making technical implementation decisions.

Test channels and decide what to keep
- Define success before posting. Specify the role’s must-have qualifications and track qualified applicants, interviews and hires alongside application volume.
- Choose a small channel mix. Begin with one audience-fit board and, if useful, one broader-distribution route. For a campus role, for example, test Handshake alongside another channel rather than assuming one site is sufficient.
- Check live terms and costs. Confirm current eligibility, limits, billing basis and any quote in the employer’s posting flow before committing a budget.
- Attribute applicants to their source. Keep source data consistent across applications so you can compare each channel’s contribution instead of treating all applicants as one pool.
- Review results by role and market. Keep channels that produce qualified candidates and hires at an acceptable cost and effort; change the mix when the evidence for your own hiring differs from general recommendations.
Check the current posting workflow
Platform features and employer workflows can change. Business News Daily reported that Glassdoor’s separate employer posting flow was retired after an integration with Indeed in July 2026. Because this is a time-sensitive secondary-source report, verify the current official employer workflow before deciding where to post or how to manage a listing. Business News Daily’s comparison
