These are estimates of personal wealth, largely tied to ownership in privately held Mars, Incorporated; they are not audited public balance sheets.

Forbes’s Jacqueline Mars profile describes her as owning an estimated one-third of Mars. Forbes’s John Mars profile likewise puts his estimated stake at one-third. The four daughters of Forrest Mars Jr. each inherited an estimated 8% stake when he died in 2016, according to Forbes’s profiles of the sisters. The ownership percentages are estimates, not a company-published cap table.
A separate September 2026 estimate from The Week put the wider family’s combined wealth at $148.2 billion. That family-wide figure is not directly interchangeable with the individual Forbes estimates: the scopes and timing differ.

How did the Mars family make its fortune?
The family fortune is principally associated with ownership of Mars, Incorporated, a privately held business built over generations—not simply with salaries or publicly traded shares. The company traces its beginnings to 1911, when Frank C. Mars began making and selling buttercream candies from his Tacoma home kitchen.
In an August 11, 2026 company release, Mars said it had approximately 170,000 associates across more than 3,600 sites and more than 130 brands spanning pet care, veterinary care, science and diagnostics, snacking, and food and nutrition. Mars reported combined Mars and Kellanova 2025 net sales above $65 billion. Those are company operating figures, not the net worth or income of any individual family member.

The company’s scale helps explain the value associated with family ownership, but private-company valuations and personal net-worth estimates are not the same as a public stock-market price. Mars CEO Poul Weihrauch described the company’s long-term approach in the release: “Our 115-year history reflects the enduring power of our values and the long-term perspective that comes with being family-owned.”

Public reporting offers only a few concrete details, so “lavish lifestyle” should not be mistaken for a verified inventory of luxury assets or spending. Forbes lists Jacqueline Mars’s residence as The Plains, Virginia, and says her horse farm has trained horses ridden by Olympic medalists. That is the clearest specific lifestyle-adjacent detail in the current profiles.

Forbes lists John Mars in Jackson, Wyoming; Marijke Mars in Los Angeles; Pamela Mars in Alexandria, Virginia; Valerie Mars in New York; and Victoria Mars in Philadelphia. These are profile-listed locations, not proof that any is a person’s primary or exclusive residence.
A 2008 report by Andrew Clark in The Guardian characterized the Mars family as reclusive and described family members spending time at a remote Wyoming ranch. That is historical reporting, not evidence of their present routines. The report also quoted Jan Pottker, author of Crisis in Candyland, describing the company headquarters as “They’re based in a dark, hidden building,” in the context of the family’s low public profile.
