The White House’s fiscal year 2027 budget request would give NASA $18.8 billion, about 23% less than the agency’s $24.4 billion FY 2026 enacted budget. That is a proposed cut, not a cut Congress has enacted. The proposal would sharply reduce several NASA accounts while increasing the amount requested for exploration; Congress decides the appropriation.
What the White House is proposing for NASA
NASA’s FY 2027 request proposes $18.8 billion in budget authority, compared with $24.4 billion enacted for FY 2026, both rounded in NASA’s FY 2027 fact sheet. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) describes the request as a 23% reduction from FY 2026 funding. These are nominal budget figures, not inflation-adjusted comparisons. NASA’s FY 2027 budget summary and GAO’s 2026 report on NASA’s major projects provide the underlying figures.
The request does not distribute reductions evenly. NASA’s account comparisons show proposed funding for Science, Space Operations and Aeronautics below their FY 2026 enacted levels, while Exploration would receive more than its FY 2026 level if the request were adopted.
| NASA account | FY 2026 enacted | FY 2027 requested | What the comparison shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Science | $7.250 billion | $3.894 billion | NASA’s request is about 46% lower than FY 2026 funding, consistent with GAO’s reported proposed reduction. |
| Space Operations | $4.175 billion | $3.047 billion | The request is lower than the prior enacted amount. |
| Aeronautics | $935 million | About $610 million | The request is lower than the prior enacted amount. |
| Exploration | $7.783 billion | $8.514 billion | The request is higher than the prior enacted amount. |
All amounts in the table are budget authority from NASA’s FY 2027 summary; FY 2026 figures are enacted amounts and FY 2027 figures are requested amounts. They show why the overall reduction does not mean every NASA priority is proposed for a cut: the request shifts resources toward Exploration while reducing several other accounts. The full request also proposes ending funding for NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement. Congress and subsequent agency direction can change how proposed amounts and program plans are carried out. NASA’s summary and the full FY 2027 request describe the proposal.

Is NASA’s budget being cut, or is this only a proposal?
For FY 2027, the 23% reduction is a presidential budget request—not an enacted appropriation. The president proposes a budget, but Congress sets federal funding through appropriations. NASA’s appropriations guidance explains the role of congressional action.
That distinction matters because a request can be changed during the legislative process. A proposed reduction may signal the administration’s priorities and create uncertainty for NASA programs, but it does not by itself authorize the agency to spend at the requested level or settle which projects will proceed.

Congress rejected the previous year’s proposed reduction
The FY 2027 proposal is the second consecutive White House request to seek a large NASA reduction. GAO says the FY 2026 presidential request proposed a 24% cut from FY 2025 enacted funding and proposed canceling 19 major projects. Congress’s FY 2026 appropriation largely maintained NASA funding near FY 2025 levels, including similar funding for the Science Mission Directorate.
GAO summarized the contrast this way: “Although NASA’s fiscal year 2026 appropriation generally maintained NASA’s funding at stable levels from fiscal year 2025, the President’s fiscal year 2027 budget request again proposed large funding reductions.” The earlier congressional decision did not settle FY 2027 funding; GAO reported continued uncertainty for projects affected by the new request. GAO’s report covers both budget rounds and NASA’s major projects.

What Congress has said about FY 2027 so far
A House Appropriations Committee report for FY 2027 recommended $24,438,336,000 for NASA, equal to the agency’s FY 2026 enacted funding. That is a committee recommendation, not an enacted appropriation, and it does not establish the final funding level. The House committee report states its recommended amount.
GAO reported in May 2026 that Congress had not passed NASA’s FY 2027 appropriation. The sources available for this article do not establish whether the recommendation became law or whether later congressional action changed the status by October 8, 2026. Readers should treat the FY 2027 amount as unresolved here—not as either a final cut or a confirmed restoration.

How to read the competing NASA budget numbers
- Check the status: “Enacted” means Congress has approved the funding; “requested” means the administration proposed it; “recommended” means a committee or chamber has advanced a position that may still change.
- Separate the total from the accounts: NASA’s overall request falls, but Exploration is proposed above its prior enacted amount while Science, Space Operations and Aeronautics are proposed below theirs.
- Keep the comparison year attached: The 23% agency-wide reduction compares the FY 2027 request with FY 2026 enacted funding. The Science comparison is $3.894 billion requested for FY 2027 versus $7.250 billion enacted for FY 2026.
The practical takeaway is that the administration is again asking for a substantially smaller NASA budget, but the proposed number is not the agency’s final FY 2027 funding. The last verified congressional position in the cited material is a House committee recommendation at the FY 2026 level; final FY 2027 action is not established here.
